Recycle Resources
Creating sustainable and environmentally sensitive events is essential for ensuring long- term community support. Many events miss opportunities to run ‘greener’, resulting in damaging ecological and social consequences. For sustainable event management and social impact to occur, collaborative strategies should be developed for reducing, reusing and recycling resources before, during and after the event.
Plan to reduce, reuse and recycle resources from big events.
Leave it better than how you found it
Green approaches should aim to leave the community and local area in a better condition than it was before the big event. Examples include the Tokyo ‘Green Olympics’ where uniforms were made from recycled plastic; beds in the athlete’s village were made from cardboard; and a ‘zero waste’ policy was implemented. With conscious efforts and practice, sustainable events can transform the environment, diminishing negative stigma and contributing to positive social impacts.
How Reduce for a big environmental benefit
Reducing resource use can be even better than recycling. Simple actions can have big effects. Good examples include using local catering suppliers to reduce food miles and including a ‘no single use plastic’ clause in event contracts. Other actions include switching to renewable energy sources, ensuring Microgrant criteria focuses on reusable resources, and thinking about a green transport plan to reduce the carbon footprint for event travel. For example, is the event accessible by foot, bike or shuttle bus?
