Job Description

Purpose

To lead, develop and manage the University’s approach to space planning, space allocation proposals and management, by developing an internal professional and proactive strategic and operational space management service.

To champion and influence innovative, financially effective and environmentally sustainable use of physical resources in support of current and emerging teaching (pedagogic) and employment strategies at the most senior management levels of the University and staff at all other levels. This is to include strategy relating to new modes/methods/locations of work, on campus/off campus locations and the behavioural change management required to deliver these new ways of working.

To produce and deliver space utilisation plans, benchmarks, and strategic scenarios and costed business cases based on the University’s planned and future needs of space with the strategic aim of minimising capital and revenue costs associated with owning and managing the property portfolio.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Develop strategic estates scenarios and plans for recommendation to the Director of Estates - considering the estates strategy, capital plan, academic strategy, the overarching University strategy relating to future size and shape, financial issues and political sensitivities.

2. Develop and maintain University policies, processes and guides on space utilisation for Facilities and Services, based on HE sector and industry best practice. Identify opportunities for more effective space utilisation and best practice and work closely with Colleges and Professional Services in order to deliver change, physical or other- wise, in order to drive up efficiencies and enhance the student experience and working environment. 3. Make recommendations to the estates and college teams on the specification of space requirements based on the quality and quantity of space required, and to support them in formulating space plans and strategic scenarios. Research and bring examples of best practice and innovation from the HE sector, as well as the business world, commercial organisations, institutes and the public sector for consideration, interpreting how space innovations might be adopted in the varied University environment.
