But, strange, the bridges that I have crossed Have all (seen safe today! Perhaps I shall find when I reach the one That lies in the distant blue, His hand may. have mended its rickety floor And its piers may be strong and new. And I can pass over, light-hearted, free As a bird on the bouyant air; Forgive me, God, for my fearful heart. My anxious and foolish care. —Grace Noll Crowell. 14. The Limit of the Lawful “All things are lawful. . . but all things are not expedient” (1 Cor. 6 : 12 ). A Christian’s responsibilities may be greater than his rights. Things lawful may not be expedient; rather than tamper with the inner loyalties of his life, he may have to deny him self indulgences that may be legiti mate but which may be unprofitable to his spiritual life. Christ pleased not Himself: Expe diency is a higher law than liberty. The supreme law of life is that all things should be done for the glory of God. If we make this the motive of our behaviour, it will solve all our problems and give guidance for every thing in life—both large and small, —John McBeath. 15. Walking the Upward Way "They that wait upon the Lord... shall mount up with wings as eagles” (Isa. 40:31). “Come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord” (Isa. 2:5). The out and out Christian is a. joy-' ful Christian. The half and half Chris tian is the kind of Christian that a great many of you are — little ac quainted with the Lord. Why live half way up the hill and swathed in the mists, when we have an unclouded sky and a radiant sun over our heads if we would climb higher and walk in the light of His face? - —Alexinder MacLaren. 16. The Enduring Link “His mercy endureth for ever” (Psal 136:26). The Psalmist. has been reviewing the history of the past. As far back as c r e a t i o n fiis eye has traveled, and all through the stormy, troublous days, he can detect the silver thread of mercy. Deeper than the darkest shades of sin, higher than the highest floods of transgression, is the love of God in the hand of whom the round world

and all its inhabitants lie as a drop on the palm. Look back on your life, and see whether you cannot see the thread of mercy linking all its beads. He will do the same for us today if we will commit all of life’s tangles to Him.— Heart to Heart Talk. 17. Holy Boldness “Cast not away. . . your confidence” (Heb. 10:35). Casting away our boldness always has its cause in something else that we allow to take its place in the heart. It may be sin. It may be care or fear, it may be self-effort, or self-seeking, self-trust; anything that is not in the perfect will of God loosens our hold on the boldness before God. .. It is as we consider Christ Jesus and follow Him that we shall hold fast our bold ness with an ever firmer grasp. —Andrew Murray. 18. What I Gave I Have “Bring ye all the tithes. . . and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not. . . pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Mal. 3:10). Possessions yielded to the- Lord are recompensed a hundredfold in this life; if in nothing else, in that there
