AT HOME WITH TOM POWERS MEON VALLEY PRESENTATION

were able to attend and we will start with Daren & Angie White who won 1st & 2nd place in the Worksop old bird race. They also took 1st & 2nd Solent Fed to boot, so a great day for them there. Next up we had Steve Edmonds who won the first old bird race of the season from Upper Heyford. Steve Turner, flying under the name J Turner & Son, the partnership name from when he flew with his late father, Steve had two wins both from the Worksop race point. Tom Powers, whoever he may be, was next up, with three wins with the old birds from Hexham, Upper Heyford and Worksop. As well as the trophies for these races there was also runner up for the Highest Points trophy which happens to be a nice Rose Bowl. Finally we have our top prize winner by a country mile. Although no longer a club member Steve Vaizey supported the evening, he has now joined a club that is much closer to home so we will not see him for the 2024 season. Steve had four wins during the old bird season from Leicester, twice on consecutive weeks, Wetherby again twice on consecutive weeks. These wins were also accompanied by multiple positions in just about every other race. With the young birds apart from the wins for Tony Adams and Roy Oldfield, Steve won every other race so he had a great season overall and deservedly was the clubs highest prize winner. That was our 2023 season and now we all have 2024 to look forward to, that despite all of the weather chal- lenges that the start of the year is bringing with it.

I know that the racing is upon us but there was one little thing that my club, the Meon Valley Flying Club, had left to do to finish the 2023 season off. Well there was that and an urgent task to start the 2024 season. It was a full Saturday evening. The first task was to run our pre-season test race, just to confirm that all electronic clocks and the club equipment were up to date and working 100%. Once that was completed it was time to get into the dining room of the pub that is our head- quarters and start the presentation evening. To make things a little easier to organise the food was to be straight off the pub menu. We all knew that would be good as when we have our winter meetings the plates of food came through the meeting room on their way to the diners. Done deal in my mind. Anyway, we all ordered our meals and enjoyed the banter on the way. My meal, on a personal note, was probably the best I could have had. I love liver, bacon and onions, Bernie cannot stand even the smell, so it

never gets cooked in our house. You can guess what I had, and how much I enjoyed it. A winner. After all the plates were cleared away

the informal presentation got under way. A good place to start would prob- ably be with those who unfortunately were unable to attend. First we have Mr & Mrs Adams, Tony and Clare, who had a quiet old bird season by their own standards. Circumstances meant that Tony was only able to race a couple of old bird races but when the young birds started he had some of the customary success. He took 1st & 2nd from Newbold Verdon and then a couple of weeks later it was the old 1-2 again, this time from Upper Heyford. Secondly we had the late Roy Oldfield and his wife Annie. Roy was unable to look after his birds so Annie took up the mantle for him and saw some not inconsiderable success for him. She won the last two old bird races, Wetherby and Perth and then to cap what excellent form she had the birds in, she took the first two young bird races. Roy and the birds are gone now, but what a fitting end to what had been a lifetime in pigeons. Now we are with those guys who

I start this week’s column with a blast from the past! I received an email from Albert Oribine from Port Glasgow who wrote; ‘Hi Joe, I can remember you writing many years ago when I had the pigeons in the 70/80/90’s and I gave some young birds to Albert Cook who flew in Fife Federation. I have just read your article in The RP about ‘Fortune Lady’/’Kingdom Spirt’. I’m glad to see your still going strong. I gave up the birds in 2001 due to ill health but I have a pal who has started back again into the sport. I got him four young birds from Jim Smith of Polmont who was a very good friend of a dear friend of mine, Davie

Our brother-in-law is over in England just now visiting his relatives so if we can get hold of him maybe he can take the book back to Australia with him. I thanked Paul for his interest in the book and hopefully we can help him out as much as we can. Interesting Point for all Clubs & Federations Before I start on the Federation results, I would just like to point out a little obser- vation I have noticed over the years while doing my column. Hopefully I can get another two years to make it up to 50 years, of being a scribe for the Scottish pigeon sport. We then drove back down to Carlisle for a few days to visit my good friend Tom Gilbertson. He took us around to visit Gordon Grant in Gretna. Scotland Federation only give three positions to each fancier. So, for example if a fancier takes the first eight in the Section of the Federation, he only gets his first three birds places. This way the other fancier can get 4th, 5th & 6th, and the next gets the 7th, 8th & 9th etc. This way the majority of the members have a chance of winning Federation prize cards or money. Whereas the big teams don’t take all the positions or prize money. This way at least everything is equally shared out between the members. I honestly think this is a great idea, I spoke to fanciers about it last year and I think it would be better system for other Federations to use. I’m open to hear your suggestions on this so please email me your opinions.

partnership of Peter & James Hutton and silent partner (loft laddie) Stuart Gilchrist who timed their four year old Widowhood cock on 1526. The pigeon was bred by Mr & Mrs Tommy Baker & Son from Wrexham and is of SVR x Van Den Bulck origin. Stuart informs me this is the third loft location this bird has flown to for Stuart and he has won the following positions: 4th Fed, 2nd Fed and now 1st Fed at all locations. F & W

Grizzle hen bred by R Clark, see text for details.

Robertson of Danderhall club won 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th & 12th positions. A Baillie also from Danderhall won 5th 8th & 9th positions. With S & S Tierney from the same club winning 7th position. Our next race is Harrowgate; regards Andy.’ Photos I keep asking fanciers and Press Officers to send me a photo of their Federation winner for the column, which seems to be falling on deaf ears. It is not me who gets the publicity it is you! Fanciers want to look at good quality pigeons. For example, this week’s chequer hen rung SU74M7476 winner of 1st South Section SNFC Rennes for Shillinglaw & Wylie. This hen is also the dam of ‘Liddle Supreme’ the SNFC Winner. The photo of the grizzle hen was raced by R Clark and rung SURP53E2201. She was a great 550- mile racer in the SNFC. Winning six times from Rennes with three of these on the day of liberation and she also won £250. She was dam and grand dam of winners. Bred by Tosh Brothers, 3rd Section 12th Open Irish National Dinard 500 miles on the day. 2201 is a daughter of ‘White Dawn’ winner of 1st Scottish National Flying Club in 1947 (the year I was born. – JM) when mated to a white cock winner of many Federation races. This photo was taken when the grizzle hen was 13 years old. She is from Keith’s Vandenabeele bloodlines, sire is a half- brother to ‘Flight Leader’ (Hawkins & Evans), dam is from Graham Stewart of Whitecraigs which is a granddaughter of ‘Shadow’. Third place is won by Brian Lavery with a yearling red hen. Ayrshire Federation – News from Baz Nicol who wrote, ‘Good morning, Joe I hope this finds you well. I was asked by a few members of Ayrshire Federation if I could send you some 1st South Section Rennes for Shillinglaw & Wylie. She is the dam of 'Liddle Supreme'.

further on, they being the 7.30am libera- tion. So it was now a 2 hours 10/15 minutes ETA, and sure enough, off the back as we thought, four arrivals for the loft to be timed all on 2 hours 14 minutes to end up taking the first four in the club all on a 2076ypm velocity, a mixture of sexes but one was the lofts good blue pied cocks with multi scores etc, to his name, and was the lofts £10 single bird nom. The nearby behind the house loft of Mr & Mrs Harry Heard was at 5th, and from 699 Teesside Federation birds these five were 14th to 17th and then 19th Fed. Up at the same time we have Eaglescliffe HS and it was club Secretary Steve Hill showing good early season form with another 1st Club from 172 entries, so two in a row for the guy, velocity 2085ypm. Alan Armstrong was 2nd, 5th & 6th, with his first being a Darren & Josh May bred entry, this hen has plenty on her CV including a 1st Fed. The Starkey & Son team were at 3rd Club, and Phil Armstrong keeping the points coming in for the third week running with 4th Club. Now to the South East Durham Fed, same liberation time, and as expected these on the NE coast lofts were that little bit faster, plus we all should know on a fast day, such as this was, the furthest flying lofts surely have the advantage, well that’s my take on it anyway. Right, we have Mark Lauderdale and Keith Barnes with Horden HS just getting home to top the Fed on a 2125ypm velocity, just in front of next allotment club mates Brian Cartridge and Ged Hall on 2124ypm. The winner is one bought from Herron & Son, a kit of 10 was bought and they’ve been a good purchase as seven of the 10 have either won or scored. The R/U is one out of the lofts 1st UNC winner from last season, and moving on to the one at 3rd & 7th Fed, the first one to the Horden EEHS winning loft of Brian Harris and Alan Richardson, this one being a cross from Alan Devlin (think I’ve heard of him) and Mowbray, Son & Allan of Chevington Drift. Mr & Mrs Wild & Son, HEEHS, Rob doing the day to day chores now, they were 4th & 6th Fed with two bred down from the lofts 1st UNC winner. At 5th Fed, HHS, we have Neil Jones and Craig Edwards, their scorer is a Eric Hickman hen that was 2nd Club, 10th Fed earlier this season. The winners were also 8th Fed with Blackhall’s Peter Harrison 1st & 2nd Club, 9th & 10th Fed, no info, and Jimmy Lyons and Brace cleaned up with Easington HS, McGillicuddy x Mickie Collins lines. Thanks Neil. The second cut results now, starting with The Mid Tyne result, a result that yet again has a oh so familiar look to it. Two lofts took 17 of the 20 positions shown, with the hens team of Graham, Gilchrist & Brennan at 1st, 3rd & 5th etc Fed, 2113 the winning blue hen, and the Miller Bros & Kyle mixed sex team, the birds not the lads, at 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th & 10th Fed. It was John Walker & Partners with same Boldon HS, 9/238, who was at 4th Fed, his yearling blue cock hen stopping the two above him from taking the lot. With the Jarrow AHS it was the in form team of Stewart & Walton with 1st & 2nd there, with 8th & 12 the Fed for back up. Thanks Steve. Same liberation has the North East

Over many years I’ve visited many types of lofts, some that made you wonder just what the birds kept inside of these lofts thought about them? But lets face it, I was visiting those lofts because the owners had won something of note, so the birds were obviously happy in them. On the other hand I’ve visited lofts that humans could have moved into them, not so much for the size of them, but for all the mod cons and the cleanliness of the insides of those lofts, and some of the sitting cabins, well! One of the latter type of lofts came to my attention not to long ago, the lofts of the Cree Bros that fly with Dudley HS/Tynemouth North Fed. I have had contacts from time to time with Paul Cree, so he’s not unknown to me, so when I saw a picture of the lofts I asked for a picture to be sent down to me, which he has, and I thanked him, and then added, all I need now Paul is reason to use that photo, and bingo! Grantham they took the first four in the club, so well done lads, and take a look people at a brilliant allotment set up, a ‘Cree’ as they are called by some up above me, to be proud

of. Those four pigeons were super bred, from the likes of Gary Cox, Alfie Hawthorn and John Jackson, with the winning hen now having 4x1sts to her credit. Paul’s company is sponsoring the newly formed North East Channel Club to 6K to help get them a foothold, and his companies name will be on the shutters on the transporter, so well done that guy and company. Monday 29th April and we are racing, well when I say we, the UNC are, with the WDA set to follow and probably the Durham Combine as well. A light southerly on them, and although I haven’t sent, the GYA sacked their race alto- gether, I’ll just have time to catch arrivals elsewhere before picking Neil up from the hospital, then up the road training, so what a nice relaxing game this is! The

race point was Huntingdon, do recollect some time ago reading that the sched- uled race point of Peterborough was unavailable, so it was on to Huntingdon, as it will be at the next race as well. The UNC went at 7am, 7.30am and 8am, with the WDA at 8.30am and finally the Durham Combine at 8.45am, and they must have cleared immediately in the fresh southerly wind, for they certainly put in some speeds. Just like the first race this season 20 odd 100's were put up, so although it was a working day for those that are still working, I hope those that did get time off to witness arrivals did get something out of it. Right, as is my want, I went across to watch arrivals come at the Cole & Wheatley Family lofts, both myself and Steve thought about the 2 hours 25 minutes mark for 159 or so miles, but that was soon changed when we got a phone call from up at Sunderland, to say they were being timed up there after 2 hours and 40 minutes, some 30 odd miles

Counties Federation with 614 being sent from the three clubs. The results I’m sending with this report tells you all you need to know, but like the previous Mid Tyne result, it shows yet again that the ‘usual suspects’ are in early season good form, especially Colin Chapman who takes 1st Fed number two. Unfortunately I’ve lost Colin’s number, so further infor- mation about his winner I can’t add, his and quite a few others I lost when my phone ceased. On now to Section 2 result, sent in by John Cockcroft, these with liberation number two. It’s so much easier to send

plus a Fut winner in Mr & Mrs Davie Baxter, so top top UNC winning lofts, thanks John. On now to Section 1, and with the Coquetdale Fed, part of the first libera- tion, from a 645 bird Fed send Adam Nichol flying right at the top of this Fed, 231 miles timed four yearling blue cocks to take the top four in the Alnwick HS, and more importantly, the top four in the Fed. They were all timed after 3 hours 17 minutes doing 2062 (3) & 2060, and although this bears out my theory that the farthest flying on such race days as this one was are favoured, Adam gets them

Dave Geach sends on two club results with Owton Manor HS, Grantham had a 9/260 bird send, and it was the Dawson Bros and Ritchie Stephenson loft that timed a yearling chequr cock on 1292 to take the top card. Graham Campbell and Kevin Hall then had the next two with a

hen from ‘Teddy Girl’ and then we had Peter Hunt 3rd and John Basley 4th. The scores on the doors from Karen at Huntingdon now, and Section 1 – 5 Feds 104/3,214; Section 2, 11 Feds 263/7,062; Section 3 – 7 Feds 221/6,383. Sorry to read about the passing of the

blue hen on 1291ypm, then a yearling chequer cock on 1282, and Geach Bros, McKenna and Chapman 4th and Jones & Son 5th. Moving on to Huntingdon, a completely different sort of race day, but the previous weeks 2nd Club blue hen of Campbell & Hall didn’t mind, for she goes one better at this race taking the top spot on 2104. Jones & Son went well again, with 2nd, 5th & 6th Club, and the Harrison Family had fast ones taking 3rd & 4th Club, 8/202. Neil sends me the Grant House HS result from Selby Burn, this was on the Saturday prior to the Monday’s races. It wasn’t to bad a race I understand, 1400’s being about the norm and it was Ritchie & Anne Ruddick who had the winner. Jones & Edwards 2nd with a numerous scoring

ex NEHU Secretary Alfie Rothwell. Alf was not only a good Administrator, Secretary and he ran the NEHU show for many years, he was an accomplished an with racing his pigeons into Whitley Bay. He also wrote under the name ‘Prospector’ for many years, he really was passionate about this sport, running a tight ship when there was far more lofts etc, to sort out rings, transfers etc, to do than there is now, he was that good. To all the Rothwell family, and indeed Alf’s many friends, I send my sympathy and condolences. Right, a Bank Holiday, so this is away a day earlier, lets hope for a straight forward sort of weekend and if we get decent racing, bring it on. BP

these sort of results in to the papers as sent to me, it shows all that we need to know, except I would like a bit of infor- mation about some of the timers on them. Anybody that would like to ‘put a bit of meat on the bone’ so to speak, please let me know at pearce barry1946@gmail.com or text to 07722896471. Right, we see some previous 1st UNC winning lofts present on the result, Crawford & Son for one,

most races, no matter what the speeds are, so well done that guy. The Dryden Bros won Amble HS, lovely town is this, with S James and Ray & Les Hulme also scoring. Trevor Shell saw in the Alnmouth HS winner for 6th Fed, then it was Kevin Moore with 1st & 2nd Chevington Drift HS, 7th & 8th Fed with club mates Wilson & Gilliard at 9th Fed, and Ian Angus completed the top 10 in the fed with Alnwick HS.

“THE DESTROYER TALKS” by Keith Gaut

I have been searching my archives and found several photos of some dear old pigeon fanciers that were friends from years ago and a fair few of thm are no longer with us, such as Graham Hancox and Dave Carter. both successful fanciers nationally with Dave winning the Saintes National and Graham Hancox a winner of the Journal Cup and who’s

Count’ managed to push the lid off his basket open and away he went never to be seen again. ‘The Count’s’ nestmate was an even smaller dark chequer hen ‘the Countess’ just like her brother I had to struggle and get a ring on her too. She repaid me by breeding ‘Dirty Harry’ an even more successful pigeon for Ray Parker (Redditch) the winner of BHW

train, those were the days having to wait for the Oakengates Station Master arriving with them on his old bike, such great memories! I’m having to rear a few ‘Pink Eyes’ x ‘Rockets’ this year for my stock, now that

Wade Davies a couple to try out of them, at his loft in Clowstop alongside of the Shropshire One Lofts and I’m sure they will do well. Most fanciers have been training ready for the first race which the Gloucester Fed have voted on putting back one week. I must say the strong tail winds wo’t do much to muscle them up though, as they are home before they are loose so to speak and the old way of always training against the wind seems to have gone with the older generation flyers such as Dave Ellams who was a super distance flyer with a very reliable family of birds clocking from 650 miles on the day from San Sebastian with his blue cock ‘Troy’ as did fellow Telford fanciers John Barnett & Daughter with their old Marriott family via C Ball & Sons. Sadly Graham Hancox, Dave Carter and Dave Ellams have all passed away, but these photos will surely remind us all of the influence they had on pigeon racing here in Telford and how memories of old friends can be rekindled by a few photos. Dave Ellams of Telford holding his Champion ‘Troy’ winning 4th Section J 29th Open NFC San Sebastian flying 650 miles on day of liberation.

I’ve lost so many when I left my door open. I always rear a few to put in my flight and moult out before chosing from them and this family of ‘The Rocket’ of Mike Ganus and the ‘Full Set’ x ‘Pink Eyes’ are my main lines for inbreeding. My other loft wasn’t affected when I lost my stock but they are Vandenabeele and Minderhoud bloodlies through ‘Golden Gaby’, ‘Black National’, ‘Chatteroux’ and ‘Geeloger’. Just a few with ‘Harry’ and ‘Skyfall’ mixed in for the longer races which unfortunately not too many want to compete in these days. I only rear a few off these and they go to club and Breeder/Buyer sales but I have given Dave Carter of Broseley, past winner of 1st Open Saintes National getting reay to sing on X Factor.

Grahan Hancox ‘Mr Tom Tit’ himself on his Suzuki 700.

best pigeon ‘Tom Tit’ won if my memory serves me well 17x1sts and 33 Fed cards. ‘Tom Tit’ was a very small blue cock who was raced as a hen as a YB, he was 100% Busschaert and both parents were bred by Bryan Campion. The sire of ‘Tom Tit’ was ‘The Count’ off Corbett’s No 2 pair that was given to by Camp (Brian Campion) as a young bird, unrung, but which I was able to persist until I managed to get a ring on his little foot. Graham had them on loan from me and bred ‘Tom Tit’ and then his sire ‘The

Swing Clear Trophy for fastest recorded velocity in Britain. He, like ‘Tom Tit’ was small and deadly on race days massing up a teen of 1st prizes in club and Federation and may I say Ray Parker only fed new beans and won just about everything. Fancy expensive corn can’t beat an on form good pigeon and ‘Dirty Harry’ was indeed one of them. That same hen bred a NIPA winner against 27,000 pigeons for my old friend the late and great Billy Parkes of Killyleagh. Billy and I swapped pigeons for a few years, back in the days when they arrived by
