Write Your Story in Just 1 Hour a Week
“What inspires me about these groups is how they bring people from all walks of life together under a common banner.” I’ve lived in Boise for 20 years, but during a short stint in Sacramento, I stumbled upon one of the most inspirational organizations I’ve come to know. Shut Up and Write is a working group that functions like a study-buddy program. No matter what you’re trying to accomplish in life, going at it alone makes hitting any roadblocks all the more difficult — especially when writing. Having a support system where you can gather with like-minded individuals not only assists with the writing process, it also fosters a healthy sense of community. That’s why I had to bring a program like this to Boise when I moved back. Shut Up and Write works like this: We gather together at a coffee shop or a similar location and do exactly as the title of the organization says — we silently write for an hour. Some of the experienced writers spend the time fleshing out ideas for their novels. Others come from different fields with different projects, like attorneys working on emails or law compositions. The most important part of our sessions is that when someone shows up, they know they have one hour of uninterrupted time committed to writing. Sessions are intentionally short. For many, the idea of committing more than an hour to write is what prevents them from getting started in the first place. But when you sit down for your
first gathering, you discover just how much you can write in a short amount of time. After the session ends, people gather together and do beta readings or small group discussions. Friendships are born and inspiration flourishes. I actually found my publisher through a group a few years back. I’ve since written the better part of three novels just by shutting up and writing. What inspires me about these groups is how they bring people from all walks of life together under a common banner. Our groups gather people of all ages, from teenagers to those in their 80s. If you look up from your screen, you’ll see doctors, students, and entrepreneurs diligently working. Many writers are interested in being published at some point, but an equal number are just interested in furthering their craft. We want to give them a time and place to accomplish those goals. Everyone is accepted equally at our sessions, and it’s inspiring to witness their passion in action. When I started the Boise chapter of Shut Up and Write, we had about 20 members in the first six months. We had a couple of sessions a week and continually supported those who needed the time. Since the early days, we have grown to 160 members who meet for four sessions a week. It has developed so much that I only host two sessions a week now, and the expansion has led others to start their own groups. We have two morning meetings, one afternoon meeting, and one evening meeting. All four gatherings are hosted in different coffee shops across the valley so that we can serve as many people as possible. The best part is that it’s completely free. It might cost you a cup of coffee, but we’re not here as a business. We simply want to serve the community and give you time to write.

As the scene unfolds, a news reporter narrates, and the hellfire of turkeys plummeting from the sky prompts him to cry out, “Oh, the humanity!”
‘NEW GIRL’ In this episode, Jess asks a coworker to join her Thanksgiving celebration at the last minute, not realizing that a turkey takes several days to prepare. She’s forced to use unconventional methods to thaw out the turkey three hours before her date arrives. Jess starts by hugging the fowl to her body to melt it with her warmth. When that doesn’t work, she throws it into the dryer, explaining that she put it on permanent press.

We lived in Glenns Ferry for years, but with my husband now working in Kuna, it was time for us to move. 5 pounds sweet potatoes 1 cup canned coconut milk

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1. Heat oven to 375 F. On a large sheet pan, bake potatoes until very soft, approximately 75 minutes. 2. Let potatoes cool until they are safe to handle, then peel and mash. 3. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine coconut milk and curry paste. Once mixed, add the mixture, salt, half the sugar, and half the butter to potatoes. 4. 30 minutes before serving, heat oven to 425 F. Spread potatoes in a baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 20 minutes. 5. Uncover potatoes and dot with remaining butter and sugar. Broil until brown, crusty, and delicious. Serve hot.

The Great War that ravaged Europe resulted in a devastating loss of life, but from those ashes rose a renewed appreciation for the importance of peace and a global effort to ensure its place in the future. THE RESTORATION OF PEACE In 1918, Germany surrendered unconditionally, and the armistice ended the fighting at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, though the war did not officially end until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles the following July. An estimated 16 million soldiers and civilians died in just four years, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in modern history. VETERANS DAY Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day was first observed on Nov. 11, 1919, to honor the one-year anniversary of the armistice, and it became a U.S. holiday in 1938. Today, Veterans Day celebrates veterans who served their country honorably. The U.K., France, Australia, and Canada also commemorate their veterans in November. If you know a veteran, thank them for their service this month.
This year, Veterans Day takes on particular historic significance: Nov. 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. Countries around the world will commemorate the signing of this peace agreement with moments of silence, centennial ceremonies, and historical exhibits. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a celebration of life. It’s a day to honor the power of peace and the living veterans across the globe who have served their countries. This November, take a moment to remember the war that helped shape the international community’s dedication to peace and thank the individuals who served to defend it. THE GREAT WAR By 1914, a world war had been years in the making, but the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire by a Serbian nationalist provided the spark that would eventually burn down much of Europe. A chain reaction of land disputes, pre-emptive attacks, and strategic alliances brought over 30 countries into World War I.
