Le détachement de Hawkesbury de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO) a annoncé, le lundi matin 26 février, que la mort suspecte survenue à Alfred- Plantagenet la semaine dernière était bel et bien un meurtre. Une autopsie a révélé que la cause du décès était une blessure causée par un coup de couteau. Mathew Brisebois, 30 ans, est accusé de meurtre au deuxième degré pour la mort de Timothy Provost, 32 ans. La police et les ambulanciers paramédi- caux de Prescott-Russell se sont rendus à une résidence située sur la route de comté 17, peu avant 20 h le 22 février 2024, et ont trouvé le corps de Timothy Provost dans un appartement. Selon la police, M. Brisebois a été arrêté par le détachement de Hawkesbury sans incident, le dimanche 25 février. Il a été accusé de meurtre au deuxième degré et demeurera en détention jusqu’à son enquête sur cautionnement, le lundi 26 février, à la Cour de justice de l’Ontario à L’Orignal. La Direction des enquêtes criminelles de la PPO, le Bureau du coroner en chef et le Service de pathologie légale de l’Ontario continuent de mener l’enquête. L’unité

(OPP) She was lated released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 13, 2024 at the L’Orignal Court of Justice. A L’Orginal woman is facing charges for possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, driving her vehicle with can- nabis in open baggage and for unsafe driving. Marie Brigitte Myre was arrested fol- lowing a traffic stop on County Road 17 in Champlain township on February 18 at approximately 10:30 p.m. for a sobriety check. She was subsequently arrested and charged by the Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police with offenses under the controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Highway Traffic Act and Cannabis Control Act.

Du côté sud de cette route se trouve la municipalité de Champlain, s’étendant de la rue Tupper jusqu’à la frontière ouest de la ville de Hawkesbury, située à environ deux kilomètres à l’ouest de la Route 34. Champlain dépend de l’accès à l’eau potable fournie par la ville de Hawkesbury, du côté sud de la Route 17. Pour connecter les réseaux d’eau potable, des modifications et un agrandissement du système de tuyauterie seraient nécessaires. Actuellement, Hawkesbury fournit déjà de l’eau potable à Champlain dans les localités de Vankleek Hill, L’Orignal et Hawkesbu- ry-ouest, moyennant des frais versés par Champlain. De nouveaux accords devront être conclus pour répartir les coûts des modifications au système d’eau potable de Hawkesbury, ainsi que pour déterminer les frais payés par Champlain pour l’utilisation du réseau. aussi entamé en 2022 des rénovations qui devraient se terminer en 2024, au coût de 2,3 millions de dollars. Le conseil municipal du canton d’Al- fred-Plantagenet a donné le feu vert à la présentation d’une demande de financement dans le cadre d’un nou- veau programme provincial d’aide aux projets d’approvisionnement en eau des municipalités. Le directeur général Michel Potvin a déclaré au conseil municipal, lors de sa séance du 20 février, que le canton avait un projet «qui répondait à toutes les exi- gences» pour obtenir une aide financière du nouveau Fonds pour les systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau favorisant la DPOTUSVDUJPOEFMPHFNFOUT )&84' -FT deux objectifs de ce nouveau programme de financement sont d’aider les municipalités à protéger leurs systèmes d’approvisionne- ment en eau et de soutenir les nouveaux projets de construction de logements. Les candidats retenus dans le cadre du programme peuvent recevoir jusqu’à 73 % du coût d’un projet. Le financement provincial est plafonné à 35 millions de dollars pour tout projet approuvé. Municipalities across the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) have kicked off half-load season, a week earlier than the previous year. 4UBSUJOH8FEOFTEBZ 'FC IBMGMPBE limits will be in place for the vast majority of the UCPR, limiting truck weight to five tonnes per axle on all municipal and county roads. Limits in Clarence-Rockland, Russell Township, Champlain Township and Hawkes- CVSZBMMDPNFJOUPQMBDFPO8FEOFTEBZ&BTU Hawkesbury’s half-load season starts March 1. As the roads begin to thaw in the early spring, the limits imposed to help avoid dam- aging the roadways as water soaks into the underlying gravel and weakens the pavement. Limits are in place until the municipalities deem the road conditions suitable. Some exemptions include County Roads 2, 7, 9, 10, 14, 17, 19 and 31, and Highway 34 and Highway 417.
The Champlain Library hosted its second of three talks with Fernando Real on the technologies of the future, Wednesday, February 21, at the Creating Centre in Vankleek Hill. The talk focused on blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies, in which Real refuted the negative narrative he said mainstream media pushes about cryptocurrencies, instead arguing that we are in the early adoption phase of a global finance revolution involving such currencies. Real argued that cryptocurrencies were created to combat inflation caused by the elimination of the gold standard and the subsequent economic crisis of 2007 and 2008, before explaining how the blockchain works, the security measures cryptocurrencies have in place to certify transactions and the future uses of the technology. While some participants in the room were skeptical about Real’s argument, others were pleased with their newfound understanding of the technology. (Photo provided)

The Vankleek Hill Cougars eliminated the St-Isidore Eagles in the first round of the NCJHL playoffs, winning the series in five games. After losing the first game 6-3, the Cougars came back with four back-to-back victories, 4-3, 6-0, 3-1 and 8-6, to defeat their rivals in the first round of the playoffs. In fact, the first two goals of the period came within 36 and 47 seconds of the puck drop, making the final score 6-1 for the Cornwall Colts. Despite having won five of six games at the beginning of February, the Hawks have lost their last three games against Rockland, Cornwall and Smith Falls.
