Frederick Classical Charter School is a public charter school in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The mission of the school is “to provide elementary and middle school-aged children in Frederick County with a well-rounded, college-focused instructional program that develops students’ knowledge, reason, and self-expression. The long-term vision of the Frederick Classical Charter School is to be nationally recognized as a replicable model for providing a traditional, rigorous liberal arts education using well-researched instructional approaches.”

Frederick Classical opened in 2013 after a long search for a suitable property. The school is centrally located at Riverside Technology Park in Frederick, Maryland, allowing access to students from all corners of the county. The school is funded through the local school system, Frederick County Public Schools, and is tuition-free. Frederick Classical currently educates 360 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The school recently received an eight-year contract extension with Frederick County Public Schools and will

increase capacity up to 376 students over the next two school years. The classical curriculum is a time-tested, research-based approach providing students with a rigorous, language-intensive and inte- grated program. Teachers and students continuously discuss the seven virtues that provide the foundation for learning at the school — love, temperance, patience, dili- gence, humility, constancy and courage. With small class sizes, Frederick Classical teachers are able to differen- tiate lessons for students and carefully integrate subjects using multimodal strategies that match the content being taught. Students learn Spanish, music, art and physical education beginning in kindergarten, with Latin language course beginning in 4th grade. The goal of clas- sical education is to help students learn how to learn, by emphasizing the inter- connection of knowledge. St. John Properties worked closely with Frederick Classical founders and leader- ship to build a professional, safe, func- tional school facility. The first phase of the build-out met the basic needs of the start-up school, including classrooms, a

multi-purpose room, restrooms and offices. A black-top space was desig- nated for outdoor play. The second phase of the build-out extended class- rooms and offices as well as opened a gymnasium and expanded the outdoor play area. The school leadership is currently planning for the final phase of the facility buildout to complete the remaining unfinished space and is considering adding a science room, music room and other multi- purpose spaces.

The school recently received an eight-year contract extension with Frederick County Public Schools and will increase capacity up to 376 students over the next two school years.
