APPENDIX B: DEFINITION OF TERMS Achievement Gap The difference in graduation rates for under-represented minority (URM) students and non-URM students. Diversity The rich abundance of differences among people based on culture, ability, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion, socio-economic background, age, and sexual orientation. Equal Opportunity Actions and practices that ensure individuals will not be discriminated against based on race, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, age, disability, or socioeconomic status. Excluded and Underserved Students Categories of students historically excluded from, or underserved/underrepresented within higher education or aspects of higher education (particular majors, graduate schools, professional schools), including, but not limited to: students of color, women, low income and/or first generation college students, undocumented students, children of migrant workers, veterans, students with disabilities, members of the LBGTQ community, transgendered students, and others. Inclusive Learning Community A learning-centered environment where diversity among people and ideas is embraced and nurtured. IPEDS Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Key Enrollment Indicators KEIs track the success toward achievement of the aggregate enrollment goals. They are the basis for the Implementation and Assessment Plan. Peer or Benchmark Schools A set of peer institutions against which to benchmark targets for graduation, persistence, and retention, and to calculate the achievement gap. Recruitmen t The active process undertaken to favorably influence a prospective student’s decision to attend the institution. Retention Rate The SE Plan uses the IPEDS definition of student retention: The rate at which students persist in their educational program at an institution, expressed as a percentage. For four-year institutions, this is the percentage of first-time bachelors (or equivalent) degree- seeking undergraduates from the previous fall again enrolled in the fall. Persistence Maintaining satisfactory student progress toward his or her educational objective until it is attained. Student Persistence Rate A measure of continuation by students from quarter-to-quarter; used as a measure of student success.
