Our institution’s data footprint is approximately 200 terabytes (TB) and we generate over 20 TB of data each year. What is a terabyte of data?

• 85,899,345 pages of Word documents • 200,000 songs or 17,000 hours of music • 500 hours of movies • 310,000 photos

A recent article in Forbes magazine described the rapid growth and expansion of data production this way: “There are 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created each day at our current pace, but that pace is only accelerating with the growth of the Internet of Things. Over the last two years alone 90 percent of the data in the world was generated.” 1

CWU’s terabytes of data are generated by a wide range of activities, from research, teaching and learning to custodial services, payroll transactions, and project management activities. The extraction
