Board of Trustees Meeting Agenda | February 2019

and transformation of these data into accurate and actionable information is mission-critical; we need to be able to understand our data to evolve our institution and ensure the success of our students. This understanding, coupled with expected growth in data generation (see figure 1), makes data- informed decision-making an important strategic investment for CWU. To realize this investment, the Board of Trustees authorized funding for the Data Warehouse Expansion (DWE) project in February 2018. The data warehouse is a platform for faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to consume data through several different vehicles, such as self-service analytics, self-guided reports, web portals, and state/federal reporting tools. The DWE project had five key objectives: • Provide a separate methodology for extracting transactional data for operational uses; • Provide consistent data for self-service analytics that be used for management practices; • Provide accurate data for official governmental reports that are reproducible; • Have a data warehouse strategy that works in conjunction with internal and external facing data to provide credibility for the organization; and • Have a methodology to produced edits for the functional users to correct host system (e.g. PeopleSoft) data before static files are transferred to the warehouse. The DWE project was managed by the CWU Project Management Office (PMO) and will be completed on March 1, 2019 with a soft go-live . This is a seminal moment in CWU’s history and one that will enhance strategic focus, improve decision-making, and yield a smarter institution. Combined with Project Management (PM) standardization and our commitment to continuous improvement, perhaps one of the more important outcomes of this project is ensuring that the work we do is aligned with institutional long-term goals and values. Project Management Prioritization: Rapid change and increasing financial and political pressure has made more urgent CWU’s increasing need to engage in integrated planning—for infrastructure, academic assessment, retention management, accreditation, and financial projects. The Project Management Office (PMO) prioritizes projects using a scoring matrix that emphasizes the value the project provides to the institution. The PMO is currently tracking seven projects (see attachment); eleven have been completed since July 2018. The five top-priority being managed now are: 1. General Education Implementation

4. Data Warehouse Expansion 5. Capital Planning & Minor Works

2. Health Sciences construction 3. Dugmore Hall construction

This prioritized list evidences our progress towards strategic alignment and integrated planning. As opportunities continue to be identified through data-informed decisions and continuous improvement cycles, the future of CWU can be built with confidence.
