APRIL 29, 1945 TURNING GOOD INTENTIONS
worthwhile without first intending to do so. We read of Daniel (Dan. 1:8-21) that he purposed (or intended) in his. heart not to defile himself. As we follow the life of Daniel through his many years, of service in the king’s court, we find he remained true to his God. Daniel was able to remain true to his God only because he first of all firmly purposed in his heart that he would remain true. Therefore the first step to doing that which is good and right is to firmly determine to do that which’ is good and right. II. GOOD DEEDS. One day a certain rich young ruler (Matt. 19:16-22) came to the Lord Jesus and asked Him saying, “What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” Jesus told him to keep the commandments. To this the young man replied, "All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?” The Lord Jesus said to him, "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast. . . and come and follow me.” But when the young man heard that, he turned sorrowfully away because he had great riches. That young man fully intended to do what was right. But when it qame to the actual test of turning his good-
intentions into deeds, he failed miser ably. III. TURNING GOOD INTENTIONS INTO DEEDS. We have already seen that good in tentions do not always turn into good deeds. How then -are we to make sure that our good intentions will result in good deeds? Dorcas (Acts 9:36-39) was a woman full of good works and almsdeeds. Scripture does not tell us much about Dorcas. But of one thing we may be sure: she was full of good works and deeds because her life was filled with the Lord Jesus. Because her life was filled with the Lord Jesus, the Lord Jesus filled her life with good deeds. In Philippians 2:13 we are told that it is God which worketh in us “both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Therefore the secret of turning good intentions into deeds is to have our lives filled with the Lord Jesus. He will work through our lives and turn our 'good intentions into deeds. Conclusion
INTO DEEDS J ames 1:22-27 By Hpmer Sperling
The Lord Jesus was on trial before Pilate. Vainly Pilate sought to reason with the infuriated mob, and show them there was no cause for crucifying Jesus. But the more Pilate sought to release Jesus, the more insistent be came the mob that our Lord be cruci fied. Finally, in order to safeguard his own reputation and standing, Pilate yielded to the mob and gave Jesus over to them to be crucified. To the very last Pilate fully intended to re lease the Lord Jesus. Pilate had good intentions, but his intentions were never turned into a deed. Many people, like Pilate, have good intentions. They intend—some day— to take C h r i s t as their personal Saviour, to dedicate their lives to Him, and to give vfp their bad habits. But somehow these good intentions are never turned into deeds. For Those Who Have Topics L GOOD INTENTIONS/ Good intentions must precede good deeds. No one ever does anything
Someone has said, “The' road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Only Jesus Christ can turn our good in tentions into good deeds, and so make our Jives useful to the praise of His glory.
