Canst thou find any reason that thou art so often mourning instead of rejoicing? Who told thee that the night would never end in day? Who told thee that the winter of thy dis- conteht would proceed from frost to snow, and yet more heavy tempest of despair? Knowest thou not that day follows night, that flood comes after ebb, that spring and summer succeed winter? Hope thou then! God fails thee not.—Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 5. Timeliness of Confession “if we confess bur sins, he is faith ful . . . to cleanse us from all un righteousness” (1 John 1:9). Confess sin instantly. Do not wait until you get alone; but in the very rush of life, with the footprints of sin still fresh, lift up your'heart to your Savior, and say, “Lord Jesus, wash me now from that sin.” The blood of Jesus, is ever at work, cleansing us from unconscious sin; but it is our • part to apply for it to cleanse from conscious and known sins as soon as we are aware1of their presence in our lives.—F. B. Meyer. 6. Satisfied in Christ “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free” (Rom. 8:2). In old age George Mueller gave this testimony: “I found my all in Him. I wanted nothing else. And by the grace of God this has remained and has made me an exceedingly happy man. It led me to care only about the things of God. I ask, have you fully surrendered the heart to God, or is there this thing or that with which you are taken up irrespective of God?”—Selected. 7, The Motive of Grace “In everything ye are enriched by Him” (1 Cor. 1:5). It is not always easy for us to dis tinguish between nature and grace, when there is a kindly temperament; but grace has God’s glory as its mo- tibe and object . , . We do not need much introspection to know whether food is palatable. We do not'weigh the pros and cons. We taste! There is need for spontaniety in our life, be cause of being with God always. —Thoughts From the Word of God. 8. Temptation “Let him that thinketh he stand- eth take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor. 10 : 12 ). Temptation is a fearful word. It indicates the beginning of a possible
1. The Lost Sorrow “When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10). Out of every sorrow God means there should come submission, a draw ing nearer to His own great heart of love, and a new vision of the shallow ness of wordly streams and the depths of divine ones. For the man who al lows an affliction to embitter his life, deaden his faith and chill his devotion to God, that affliction is a lost sor row. A lost sorrow is a witness that God’s means of drawing you close to Himself has failed because you have refused what He is so tenderly seek ing to bring forth from it for your life. —J. H. McConkey. 2. Fulfilling the Law of Christ “Bear ye one another’s burdens . . . fulfil the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). Let me never ask for leisure While the world is toiling so, While the patient poorer people Only weary effort know; Let me have my share of labor, Lest some burden, it may be, Falls upon another’s shoulders That the Father meant for me. In my daily life and service; Like the Savior let me be, As He trod the hills of Judah •And the shores of Galilee; He had balm for every heartache, There was healing in His touch— But to lighten earth’s afflictions Even .Jesus suffered much. —E. Louise Umlauf. 3. The Perfecting Gift “Above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfectness” (Col. 3:14, R.V.). The picture in the apostle’s mind is that of one who is putting around his body the loose and flowing robe, the garment of antiquity. It occurs to him that these loose garments, no matter -now fine or beautiful they may be, can never be worn with comfort or with grace, until they are clasped together with, a girdle. And Paul says this uniting band is love, which is the girdle of every other grace; the final touch that beautifies the whole; that turns the task into delight, and per fects every relationship. —G. H. Morrison. 4. God Fails Thee Not “Rejoice . . . that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad” (1 Pet. 4:13).
