APRIL 2019 the Beauty BOOK
Put Your Best Face Forward
Fads come and go, but one trend is timeless: healthy skin. Have you ever seen someone whose skin glows as if there were a light inside them shining outward, giving them a beautiful, youthful appearance? This is what I want for all my patients, and with the right regimen, it’s easily attainable. While the only part of the skin we see is the epidermis, this outer, visible layer of skin hints at what’s going on beneath the surface. Large pores, old scars, wrinkles above the lips, and other surface imperfections are indicative of deeper issues. Luckily, these surface- level indicators can help us determine which treatments will best revitalize the skin. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an amazing anti- aging and rejuvenating treatment that uses the patient’s own plasma to return volume and elasticity to the skin. PRP is useful in a number of ways, including for hair replacement and restoration.
Our estheticians are pros at finding a skincare regimen that’s right for you. From helping with hair removal on the eyebrows to provide contouring and brighter eyes, to providing gentle but powerful facial treatments that leave your skin feeling dewy, they can determine what will be most beneficial for each patient and provide them with the ideal anti-aging plan. Remember — an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s easier to prevent many of these signs of aging than remove them. In every season, wear sunscreen when you go outside. While it’s important to soak up some sunshine and give yourself a Vitamin D boost, you don’t want your skin to be harmed by excessive exposure. Spend less time outside, and if you’ll be in the sun for more than 10 minutes, wear protective layers or hats to protect your skin. Jane Iredale’s dry powder sunscreen is an excellent alternative to cream-based protection. If you’ll be in the water, be sure to use a waterproof formula. Healthy eating and exercise will also contribute to your skin’s appearance. A diet rich in veggies, especially the cruciferous variety, has been shown to improve volume and elasticity in multiple studies. Sugar and caffeine are dehydrating, so consume them sparingly. As always, I’m here to answer your health and beauty questions. I love being a part of my patients’ anti-aging journey and using the beautiful mixture of science and art to bring you the results you desire.
“Remember — an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s easier to prevent many of these signs of aging than remove them.”
Skin naturally loses elasticity as we age, but we can combat that loss by using precise, customized treatments. When a patient comes in, I take an assessment of their skin, specifically their face, to identify areas that have lost volume and are showing other signs of aging. From that information, treatments can be used to recreate that younger appearance through volume restoration and carefully boosting specific parts of the face. With precisely placed Botox injections and fillers, we can return youth and vitality to a patient’s appearance.

Don’t Sweat It
Why MiraDry Is Your No-Sweat Solution
Summertime brings to mind relaxed days on the beach, happy hour on the patio, and weekend getaways with friends. But for those who suffer from excessive sweating, warm weather is anything but relaxing. It can make you feel anxious and eager to do anything you can to avoid a social situation that puts your underarm stains in the spotlight. First, know that you are not alone. About 37 million people experience excessive sweating. Secondly, take heart, because innovators have sufferers like you in mind with the latest way to treat and reduce underarm sweat. The new technology is called miraDry. If you are concerned about excessive underarm sweat or have been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis (abnormally excessive sweating), this new, nonsurgical treatment might be your solution. MiraDry is the first and only FDA-approved treatment that permanently reduces underarm sweat, odor, and hair, making it a winning treatment trifecta. MiraDry uses thermal technology to target and remove sweat glands in the underarm area. During treatment, your clinician will use local anesthesia to minimize discomfort, then carefully use the miraDry hand piece to apply the targeted thermal energy and remove sweat glands. Treatment takes about an hour, and patients see immediate results.
After treatment, you will continue to sweat naturally in other areas of your body, but the amount of sweat you see in the underarm area will be drastically reduced. In one clinical study, patients reported an average of 86 percent sweat reduction after treatment. Since sweat glands do not grow back, once they’re gone, they’re gone! You can expect these benefits after miraDry treatment: 1. Drastic reduction in sweating. 2. Eliminate the need for deodorant–you will NOT need deodorant again! 3. Eliminate hair by 72 percent. We are the first practice in the Rio Grande Valley to offer miraDry treatment! Call us to schedule your consultation. Mention this article to get $250 off!

Alicia Keys’ Bare Look
Behind the Singer’s Choice to Go Makeup Free
In 2016, singer, songwriter, and producer Alicia Keys made a commitment to go makeup free. Since then, the star has been photographed with a minimal to makeup-free look at many high-profile occasions, including last
While writing songs for her new album, Keys began to put words to what she’d been feeling. In one song, she wrote, “What if I don’t want to put on all that makeup / Who says I must conceal what I’m made of.” It was the beginning of understanding how her choices about her outward appearance had been based on “hiding a piece of who you are in order to fit into a picture of what others see as perfection.” If the lyrics were the beginning, a photoshoot for the album was the catalyst for her no-makeup commitment. Her photographer wanted to take photos that reflected the raw, real tone of the album. Keys was nervous — she’d walked into the studio in a scarf and sweatshirt, having just left the gym. But she decided to go with the untouched look. In the process, she found the intentions she’d put forth in her songwriting realized. “I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt,” Keys writes about the shoot. While she still enjoys wearing makeup whenever she feels like it, Keys is no longer covering up who she is. “Not my face, not my mind, not my soul,” she declares.
year’s Grammy Awards and the 2016 MTV Awards. Fans and other stars have followed suit, posting #nomakeup selfies on Instagram and Facebook. But despite all the press, the 15-time Grammy Award winner is clear that she’s not anti-makeup. In fact, the decision wasn’t about makeup. “I love my lip gloss, I love my blush, I love my eyeliner. It’s not about that,” Keys said in a press conference. “It has to do with who you are, what makes you feel good, how you want to express that.” She enjoys using makeup, but was sick of feeling like she needed it to be accepted. “I was really starting to feel like that — that, as I am, I was not good enough for the world to see,” Keys said.
