Alicia Keys’ Bare Look

Behind the Singer’s Choice to Go Makeup Free

In 2016, singer, songwriter, and producer Alicia Keys made a commitment to go makeup free. Since then, the star has been photographed with a minimal to makeup-free look at many high-profile occasions, including last

While writing songs for her new album, Keys began to put words to what she’d been feeling. In one song, she wrote, “What if I don’t want to put on all that makeup / Who says I must conceal what I’m made of.” It was the beginning of understanding how her choices about her outward appearance had been based on “hiding a piece of who you are in order to fit into a picture of what others see as perfection.” If the lyrics were the beginning, a photoshoot for the album was the catalyst for her no-makeup commitment. year’s Grammy Awards and the 2016 MTV Awards. Fans and other stars have followed suit, posting #nomakeup selfies on Instagram and Facebook. But despite all the press, the 15-time Grammy Award winner is clear that she’s not anti-makeup. In fact, the decision wasn’t about makeup. “I love my lip gloss, I love my blush, I love my eyeliner. It’s not about that,” Keys said in a press conference. “It has to do with who you are, what makes you feel good, how you want to express that.” She enjoys using makeup, but was sick of feeling like she needed it to be accepted. “I was really starting to feel like that — that, as I am, I was not good enough for the world to see,” Keys said.
