Queen's College Scholarship Brochure

Candidates will usually be expected to be proficient on two instruments and be required to perform on both. However, those who can demonstrate exceptional ability on one instrument alone will be seriously considered. In the event of being successful, tuition on a second instrument may be offered in addition to tuition on their primary study. We also offer Choral Scholarships for specialist vocalists. Open to all voice categories, these awards feature free vocal tuition in return for the dedicated support of our choral programme and are designed for applicants for whom singing is their primary discipline. Applicants should have previous experience in choral singing and ideally a standard similar or above that of instrumental applicants.

Requirements Music Scholarships are awarded on the results of auditions and musicianship tests, conducted by the Director of Music and the Director of Music in the Prep School. It is not required that exams should have been taken but for pupils currently in Year 5 entering Year 6, a standard equivalent to Grade 3 is expected on their primary study, pupils currently in Year 6 entering Year 7, a standard equivalent to Grade 4 on their primary study, students entering Year 9 a standard equivalent to Grade 5 on their primary study and students entering Year 12 a standard equivalent to Grade 7 on their primary study instrument.

Auditions - Auditions will last between 25-30 minutes and take place in an audition room. Time will be given for a warm-up beforehand in a separate practice room. The following will be required of all candidates: Q T o perform two pieces on their first study and one piece on any further instruments offered Q T o sight-read on their primary instrument. Q T o respond to questions about their chosen pieces Q T o undertake ear tests - this will include answering questions on an unknown piece of music played to them Plenty of opportunity will be given for candidates to give indications of their interests in the subject and any evidence of extra musical ability will also be welcomed.

Accompanists – all accompaniment will be undertaken by the Director of Music. Candidates should bring photocopies of piano accompaniments for instrumental pieces. If particularly complex accompaniments are required, some advance warning would be much appreciated since there will not be much opportunity for a rehearsal together prior to the auditions. Backing tracks are perfectly acceptable as long as the solo line is not doubled. Expectations Candidates gaining an award will be expected to participate actively in the musical life of the school, contributing to ensembles as directed by the Director of Music. Holders of Music Awards are expected to set an example by their standards of musicianship and their commitment to school music. Participation in some aspects of choral activity will be expected and award holders are usually expected to take Music to at least GCSE level.
