PARENTAL AUTHORITY IN THE HOME

THE BLESSED HOPE A menace on Prophecy by James H. McConkey. The editor of the Christ Lire says:

refuse to respect the authority of Church, State or society, We need less spineless parental sentimentalism and neglect, and more of that parental love which will control and guide the child for his own good. God send arouse- ment to the American parent. — Western Record. ■ m , Jjf THE FAITH OF A QUEEN The death of the beloved Dowager Queen Alexandra of England has brought to mind many beautiful Inci dents expressive of her deeply spirit ual character. One such was in con nection with the restoration to health, after a serious Illness, of her husband, at which time she presented a beauti ful lectern to the church at Sandring- * ham on which was engraved the in scription : “ To the Glory of God! “ A Thank-offering for His Mercy “ 14 December, 1871 “ Alexandra. “ When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord, and He heard me.” Writing to a friend about the death of her first-born son, the Duke of Clar ence, affectionately called “ Eddy” by his mother, she said: “ Shortly before Eddy’s death, he was lying aB if In sleep. Suddenly, he raised himself up from his pillow and, looking around the roofb, said twice: ‘Who’s that call ing me? Who’s that calling me?’ J gently said, ‘It’s Jesus calling you,’ and I hope he heard me.’’ — The Christian Herald (London). M. m PERSISTENCY IN SOUL-SAVING Here is a worth-while illustration of the value of an immortal soul and the urgency and persistency with which we should seek its salvation: During the war an English ship con taining a large supply of gold bullion was sunk by a mine off the coast of Ireland. Since the summer of 1918 a British admiralty ship has been con-“ stantly at work during the summer months to recover this lost treasure, and now practically all of It, in value amounting to over thirty millons, has been salvaged. The divers have met with all kinds of difliculties and dangers, working ninety feet below the surface of the water, being at tacked by great fish, endangering their lives when they were raised suddenly from the deep water with Its great pressure to the surface with its light pressure. Many devices for the detec tion and recovery of gold, and for the safety and efficiency of the divers, were used. No effort for the recovery of the gold has been considered wasted. God’s estimate of a single soul is infinitely greater than thirty millon dollars. Shall we not use at least equal persistence, ingenuity a n d courage in seeking to recover a lost soul as these divers used to recover

|ANY THINGS recently hare forced It upon the attention of thoughtful observers that the sanctity and authority of the American home are In peril. Something In the spirit of the day has led numberless American parents to abdicate the holy respon sibility and opportunity which God has placed In their hands for molding the character of their own children that they may be wholesome and positive forces In Church and State in the next generation. Two honor graduates of a great university still in their ’teens recently murdered their playmate simply to have a new set of thrills and to flatter themselves how smart they were In creating a sensation without getting caught. Their parents were wealthy —■their homes perfect in mechanical comforts and luxuries. What looked like perfect “ modern paraphernalia of culture and comfort, with no parental direction or restraint, became a curse. The country Is be coming shocked at the number of im mature youths among the criminal classes. There Is an urgent need that American parents shall take stock of themselves. Are you Indulging your child, seeking to feed his every selfish whim? Or are you exercising that authority and restraint In his nurtur ing that the Bible and common sense both teach and without which positive character is not formed? To the young child the parent stands in place of Church,. State and society. If the parent exercises not the authority which God has placed in his hands, in numberless cases the child will later

“ In a day when prophecy la pouring from the presses, Mr. McConkey s ‘The Blessed Hope' comes with a singular strength and freshness. The whole message Is heart-gripping for these last days."

f |1 HIS man was a good average minister oc- I cupying the pulpit of a neat little church. He had a vision of a much larger work. His heart longed for a larger building full of worshipers. He was aware that in the business world men who advertised judi ciously built larger build ings and drew more cus- . tomers. He decided to tell the world about his business, that of saving souls and developing the spiritual life. He tried the usual church ad. in the Saturday evening paper. That helped some, but it was not wholly satis factory. Then he_ enquired of The National Religious • Press as to their plan. Soon he was publishing his own
