I n January 1952 The American Sci entist printed an article by Sir Ed mund Whittaker,* a leading British mathematician and a Fellow of the Royal Society, in which he discussed Eddington’s Principle. The principle need not concern us here but some of the conclusions of this author which emerged from his considera tion of this hypothesis is of special interest to the Christian. In this paper he considers how the scientist by using the experimental method and by logical reasoning has arrived at certain mathematical laws that explain many aspects of the ma terial universe. He is quick to point out the obvious, but frequently for gotten truth, that these laws did not originate with those who formulated them but rather they are timeless, ex isting even prior to the universe of matter. To him the very presence of these eternal mathematical laws of nature which are prior to nature sug gests the existence of God. They even suggest something of the nature of God since “mathematical law is a concept of the mind, and from the existence of mathematical law we in fer that our minds have access to something akin to themselves that is in or behind the universe.” Some men reasoning from nature to God have suggested that God is co-eternal with the universe. Whit taker dismisses this concept of God as being untenable because of present day concepts of cosmology. Today, science recognizes that the universe has a definite age (present day esti mates give an age of around three billion years) and also tells us that A Valid M arriage is not based upon feel ings and emotions, though these may attend it. It is not deter mined by ability, experience, or willpower. Marriage is valid the moment two lives give themselves to one another with a mutually understood purpose to belong to one another forever. In this way, also, the soul is

the universe is in the process of running down like a clock. There fore, the universe must have a begin ning and an end. For this reason God must exist outside of the natural universe for whatever other proper ties He has, He must be eternal. Thus, we see one scientist, at least, believes that the study of nature can give some clues as to the existence and nature of God. In the words of Whittaker, “Material nature has made manifest to our understanding realities greater than itself, realities which point to God who is not bound up with the world, who is transcend ent and subject to no limitation.” He recognizes that this role of nature as a witness to man of God is an im portant concept in religion and one which he concludes “ can now be ad mitted to be not alien to the philoso phy of science.” This concept, of course, is true of Christianity where we find in Romans 1:20 Paul saying^ “ For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” Although nature does possess this witness, even through present day science, it is still an incomplete wit ness because it does not give a com plete picture of God. Only through the revealed Word of God can man find the God of love who sent His Son into the world- to redeem man from the penalty of his sin. * Whittaker, E. Eddington's Principle in the Philosophy of Science. American Scientist, Vol. 40, 45-60, 1952.

Marriage united to Jesus Christ. He has given Himself to us in infinite love through His life, death, and resurrection. He has spoken to us an everlasting “ Yes.” The mo ment we respond to Him, yield Him our hearts, trust Him to take and redeem our spirits, we are His forever. He only awaits our “ Yes.”—Robert Boyd Munger, D.D.
