HAIR DURING AND AFTER THE COVID-19 ERA What’s Changed, and Will the Changes Stick?

While getting your hair styled and cut is far from essential to your survival, millions of women and men across the country realized during the months of quarantine earlier this year just how important their hair care is for expressing themselves. This shouldn’t be a very surprising realization — after all, people have been using their hair to express their personalities, culture, and beliefs for millennia. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that such a drastic societal change led to equally drastic hair care choices for people all over the world. What this wild and weird season for hair care will mean for the future, however, only time will tell. If celebrities are the harbingers of styles and trends to come, then a brief glance at their social media accounts for their current hairstyles gives us a good idea of the kind of styles that people in society at large might begin to adopt as well.

In a word, their choices have been daring. Two noteworthy (though far from all-encompassing) trends emerged.

First, many celebs have been experimenting with many different colors of hair dye (though pink has been a clear favorite). Among those sporting newly dyed hairdos are actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, singer Ricky Martin, and singer Hayley Kiyoko. The other popular option, besides dying what you’ve got, seems to be shaving it all off. Model and actor Ruby Rose gave herself a buzz cut, and singer P!nk buzzed much of her hair off as well. P!nk also dyed what was left of her hair — you guessed it — pink. While these well-known celebrities might have normally been bound by their careers to meticulously control their image, the quarantine gave them a brief moment to express themselves more than usual. Will those stylistic choices last past the COVID-19 era? Since major events throughout history have proven to alter how people express themselves, it’s definitely possible.
