Did You Read . . . THE WHITE COCK By Evelyn McFarl&ne McClusky? {In the January K ing ’ s B usiness } A student writes: " I liked the White Cock* but do you know what made me wish to be loyal to my Saviour? Torch and Sword. It challenged me to be God’s TORCH, and I confessed Christ. Do you know what opened up God’s Word to me? Blaek and White. It showed me that my business here is to worship God through the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. It made it all so reasonable and beautiful, so impera tive. The fur of the ermine is of perfect whit- ness. The dainty little creature appears to make it the business of his life to keep clean. So strong is this instinct that the ermine will suffer capture rather than defile ment. Trappers know this fact and use it to the destruction of the little creature. They will smear filth over the paths that the ermine would naturally choose to es cape by, and it falls into the trap because it keeps itself unspotted. Do we so detest the defilement of sin that we would suffer rather than become defiled? —The Expositor. II. T he U pward L ook To cultivate a pure taste it is necessary to study the best. Sir Peter Lely, the cel ebrated painter, made it a point never to look at a bad picture, having found by ex perience this so affected him that when he began to paint, his mind was obsessed by it and even his brash seemed to be tainted. And this is true in the cultivation of inner purity. Such purity can be preserved only by refusing even to look upon evil, well knowing that through the channels of the eyes there can flash pictures which pollute the mind and poison the imagination. Nothing keeps the heart so pure as the up ward look. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” —G. B. F. H allock . III. A P urifying H ope The outstanding appeal of the blessed hope is to purity of life. “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3 :3 ). If Christ should come today, would He find you with a clean heart? —R uth P axson .

GOSPEL TRUMPET C O M PA N Y Sacramento, California Anderson, Indiana May I say just here, that it is no use call ing on God to forgive us if we have wronged somebody, unless we are willing to put it right with them. This missionary added in his letter, "From the very moment that I determined by God’s grace to write the letter, everything has changed. God is beginning to use me, and I know that souls are going to be saved." —W . H. A lois . “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank.” Little did Daniel dream as he took this heroic stand that through the centuries following and on, on into the fu ture his name would stand as a synonym of every one who dared to keep himself pure. “Keep thyself pure” (1 Tim. 5:22) is the injunction of the Apostle Paul, and if we are to be “Daniels” of the twentieth cen tury, we must discover Daniel’s secret. He trusted in God. “Now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.” Daniel knew that his God was able to keep; so to Him he committed his life in its entirety. A life of purity in thought, in conversa tion, in conduct, not only blesses the one who lives it, but also becomes a real puri fying stream of blessing to others. Such purity is not the mere outward purity of the scribes and Pharisees. Such purity does not find its source in the human heart; it flows from God, who says, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isa. 1:18). “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psa. 119:9). And that Word says. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you” (John 15:3). "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Then the gracious promise is that having received this clean, pure new nature, we ‘ are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). This is Jesus’ message, “Blessed are the pure in heart.” MARCH 26, 1939 “ I W O U L D B E P U R E ” M atthew 23:23-28; D aniel 1:8-16 Meditation on the Lesson
