DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS

As they progress, scholars broaden their skills with new techniques and materials, completing major projects from concept to manufacture.They are encouraged to enter competitions such as the Samson Design for Tomorrow Competition. One pupil won the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship in 2026 and have opportunities to work with professional practitioners and external companies. HOW ARE PUPILS ASSESSED? The assessment will consist of: • A portfolio assessment • A brief interview with the Head of DT • An assignment in response to a design problem (to be completed in advance of the assessment day) Portfolios should display: • Strong drawing ability combined with the good use of graphical techniques.This may well include reference to art projects, sketches, still life drawings, leaflets, posters, or websites created by the candidate • Evidence of 3-dimensional work showing an awareness of different materials.This may include concept sketches, diaries, design work, final pieces and detailed photographs of design and technology projects completed in school, in any material

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR APPLICANTS?

Design and technology offers a fusion between design thinking, creativity, and skill in manufacture. Successful candidates will have a keen interest in design, an understanding of the processes by which products are designed and made, and will have a natural ability to find solutions to problems, work creatively and with dexterity. WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP OFFER? Key benefits • Two workshops and three studios with CAD, 3D printing and laser cutting, six days a week • Weekly hands-on sessions from Year 9 in woodwork, electronics and CAD projects • Opportunities to enter national competitions, including the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship Design scholars have access to two workshops and three studios six days a week, with OnShape and other CAD software, 3D printing, laser cutting, a CNC router, wood- turning lathes and further engineering facilities. From their first term, scholars have a weekly workshop session covering traditional woodworking, STEM projects such as rocket building, electronics and soldering, and CAD-based and 3D-printed projects — recent work has included wine racks, jewellery and enamelling.
