The programme is built around three strands - Physical (movement, conditioning and athletic development towards a Physical Passport),Targeted (sport-specific technical support) and Performance (psychology, character and habit-building) developing physical competency, psychological capability and character. Facilities, described by Tatler as among the best in the country, include an international-standard sports hall for eight sports, an indoor cricket centre, a 25-metre pool with touch-pad timing, a 300sqm Movement First gym, two squash courts, two hockey astros, athletics, Padel and indoor tennis facilities, and extensive grass pitches including College Field. Scholars receive an individualised strength and conditioning programme with regular monitoring of mobility, speed, power and strength, including plyometric and hypertrophy-based training. The College’s links with clubs and county, regional and national sport support scholars’ ambitions beyond school, and its fixture programme offers competition across a dozen-plus sports. Recent tours have included Dubai, Sri Lanka and South Africa, alongside seasonal training camps and festivals. HOW ARE PUPILS ASSESSED? Candidates should state their choice of sport(s) to be assessed in priority order on the application form, up to a maximum of three. The assessment normally consists of: • Skills and conditioned-game sessions in the chosen core sport(s).An additional observation in other sport(s) may be organised at the discretion of the College. • Testing will involve Functional Movement Screening, strength, speed, power and cardiovascular capacity assessments. • A brief interview with the Director or Heads of the assessed sport(s), in which candidates are expected to show an awareness of current issues regarding their own sports and sport in general, and to demonstrate their commitment and ambition. If a candidate is unable to be assessed on the day for certain reasons (eg injury), the College reserves the right to make an award based on prior knowledge of the candidate Gym-style tests (agility, balance, co-ordination, speed, and stamina).
WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM OUR APPLICANTS? We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate exceptional talents in one of the College’s core team sports:
• Cricket (boys and girls) • Hockey (boys and girls) • Netball (girls) • Rugby (boys) • Swimming (boys and girls) • Tennis (boys and girls)
However, exceptional talent in other sports, (football, golf, athletics, triathlon, basketball and more) will be considered and should be discussed on a case-by-case basis with the Director of Sport. Successful candidates may well be playing or training at county level or higher in their chosen sport(s) although this is not a requirement or a guarantee for a scholarship. There is no requirement to study PE at GCSE, but it is encouraged. Regardless of which sports are offered for assessment, scholars are normally expected to participate in core College team sports, as the Director of Sport deems appropriate, throughout the year. Sport scholars are expected to show leadership and to make an active and full contribution to the sporting life of the College, not only through their individual performance as a member of school teams but also as role models in their attitude and behaviour as sportsmen and sportswomen.
