Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee, I invite you to the 2021 American College of Mohs Surgery Annual Meeting in Seattle! This has been a difficult year for all of us. The pandemic has created profound difficulties across our membership and I want to personally thank you for your support of the College. I’m sure that many of you share Program Chair’s Message
The Scientific Program Committee has created a schedule of sessions that I am confident will expand and deepen your knowledge in the areas of Mohs surgery and reconstruction, patient outcomes, practice management, and much more. We missed our Annual Meeting in 2020. This has been an exceptionally challenging year for all of us, and we are really looking forward to the opportunity for interaction, either in person, virtually, or in both forms. Each year, the time we spend together during the Annual Meeting helps further develop not only our surgical skills and body of knowledge, but also renews our commitment to providing the very best patient care possible. This meeting is one of the few times we have each year to reconnect with colleagues, recharge our minds, and reengage with the important and timely issues facing our practices and our specialty. As we begin to prepare for the first-ever subspecialty board certification exams for micrographic dermatologic surgery, there has never been a more important time than now to showcase how and why Mohs surgery is the gold standard for skin cancer treatment. In addition to the educational content of the meeting, you will find opportunities to deconstruct the year that was 2020 at virtually. We have learned so much this year; some lessons much tougher than others. Throughout the meeting you will also be able to interact virtually with industry exhibitors and sponsors, learning how the resources, tools, services and information they provide may benefit your practice. My deepest thanks to Dr. Ian Maher, chair of the Scientific Program Committee, for his work leading the development of another outstanding and comprehensive meeting program. Thanks also to Dr. Jerry Brewer and the CME & Education Committee for their time and contributions. Dr. Sumaira Z. Aasi and the Board Certification Task Force must be acknowledged for their endless efforts to ensure that every ACMS member slated to sit for the ABD MDS exam will have the necessary content matter easily accessible. Additionally, thanks are due to Mary Riordan and the entire ACMS staff for their tireless work planning the many details that make the Annual Meeting a seamless and enjoyable event. my mix of excitement and trepidation when thinking ahead to the certifying exam on October 4 th . We have dedicated significant time within the program to board review and are confident that this will provide all attendees with a solid foundation on which to build their board preparation. As always we’ve carefully constructed the program to help you continue to deliver the best quality care, that ‘Mohs College Difference’, to your patients. Here are a few of the sessions I am particularly excited about: • Richard Anderson is a former CEO at Northwest and Delta Airlines as well as a former United Healthcare executive. He will discuss his career journey and how he used the development of key performance indicators to drive quality in the airline industry. With his healthcare payor experience he will give us insight into what ACOs and APMs may be looking for from skin cancer care. • I am excited to welcome two of my colleagues from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Samir Khariwala, Director of Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr. Christopher Wilke, Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Hilda Stambuk, Director of Head and Neck Radiology at Memorial Sloan Kettering will also lend her expertise to the panel. I look forward to our guests sharing their insights on a collection of high risk tumors during the Tumor Board session. • Dr. Jason Newman of the University of Pennsylvania will give an ENT surgeon’s perspective on facial nerve anatomy. • The biggest thank you to Dr. Sumaira Aasi for leading the board review sessions at the Annual Meeting, and for editing the wonderful board review text which we are all familiarizing ourselves with! • Get your Kahoot! app ready because we’ve got a Trivia Night event led by Drs. David Carr and William Higgins! Thank you to Dr. Glenn Goldman, the Scientific Program Committee, CME & Education Committee, staff, and others who have contributed so much of their experience and effort toward plan this meeting.
