THE MONTHLY ADVOCATE

My father was a person I looked up to as I was growing up, and so was my grandfather. They made sacrifices so that their children and I could have a better life than they did. They modeled what it looks like to be a responsible man who takes care of his duties as a husband, father, and employee. When I became a father, I saw my father’s sacrifices in a whole new light. Even the little choices he made every day involved giving me his time and energy. Being a parent forces you to be selfless, which is hard, but it is also the most rewarding experience you can imagine. Seeing the innocence that my kids possess and the sheer joy they feel just by playing with me is the best part. I love that. The most challenging part of becoming a parent is that there is no book that can answer the questions or uncertainties that come with raising a child. Fatherhood is the process of learning as you go. It’s tougher some days than others. Some days, you get it all right — your kids eat the right foods without a fuss, are happy all day, and go to sleep tired at the end of it. Other days, you do the best you can, and you learn that your kids are their own people who are learning too. Being a father means finding more patience than you knew you had. It also means finding more love than you ever knew existed. Our work as immigration attorneys also brings the importance of fatherhood into constant focus. In many cases, the father is the sole worker in a family, while the mother stays home. This isn’t the case for Keren and I, but we recognize that it is the reality for many of the families we work with. Sadly, we often see families broken up when a father is detained on his way to work and separated from his family. It leaves the mother as the sole caretaker for the family, having to take on jobs — sometimes for the first time — just to make ends meet. The family is left scrambling to come up with money.

In honor of Father’s Day, I’d like to recognize the people who helped me become the person I am today. I’ve had the privilege of having good role models throughout my life. Among these, the men in my family showed me what it means to care for a family and be a father. Their example taught me that the role of a father is not just something you fill when you have a child. It means taking on one of the most challenging and rewarding roles you will ever have. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DAD Reflections on Fatherhood HANGING OUT WITH MY SON AARON

I plan to spend Father’s Day with Keren and our kids, enjoying each other’s company. We will hopefully get a chance to go to the park or pool, but what really matters is that we are together. I hope you get to do the same with your family. Hold each other tight, and spend your Father’s Day with the ones you love.

LAY SOME SHADE ON ME THE BEST VEGETABLES TO PLANT IN SHADY SPOTS

There’s nothing quite like growing your own vegetables, but if your home doesn’t get the best sunlight, what can you do? It’s a problem many gardeners face. Even if you live in a sunny area, you may have a shady corner of the garden or side of the house going to waste. Fortunately, there are plenty of plants that do well in partial and full shade. As a general rule, leafy greens do better in shade and milder temperatures than other vegetables. Flowering plants and vines, such as cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes, need more hours of sunlight per day in order to thrive — about six hours or more. Herbs While many herbs, such as basil, are better suited for sunnier conditions, there are a few that will do great in shade. These include chives, cilantro, golden marjoram, mint, oregano, and parsley. (Hours of sun per day: 3) Kale Typically, kale does well in partial shade. When kale is grown in full shade, the leaves tend to be slightly smaller, but this can be offset by growing additional plants. (Hours of sun per day: 3–4) Peas Like kale, when grown in shade, peas and beans won’t grow quite as full, and plants may take longer to mature, but with proper planning, you’ll still reap a plentiful harvest. Bush and dwarf varieties are recommended over their pole counterparts. (Hours of sun per day: 4–5) Potatoes Root vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, and beets, will grow in partial shade, but they may take a few more weeks to mature, and they may produce fewer vegetables. However, as most gardeners agree, the results are still worth the effort. (Hours of sun per day: 4–5) Spinach Like most leafy greens, spinach does very well in shade, particularly baby spinach. The plant will continue to produce leaves for an extended period of time if you regularly harvest the outer leaves. (Hours of sun per day: 3–4)

As you read in attorney Jorge’s story, there is nothing so powerful as a parent’s love. When a parent and child are reunited after living in two different countries, it’s one of the most beautiful moments to be part of. While we do see families separated because of immigration matters, we also use our knowledge of immigration law to reunite parents and children and keep families together. So if you are separated from your loved ones, do not give up hope. With a family petition, you may be able to keep your family together. If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you have the right to petition for your spouse, children, parents, and siblings. For example, you can file a petition for your parent. Once it is approved and your parent receives their green card, you will be able to bring them home. Children under 21 are considered immediate relatives, and you can petition for a green card for them. They will not have to wait for a visa number, so this can speed up the immigration process. If your child is over 21 or married, you can still file a petition for them, but they will have to wait for a visa number. If you have a parent in another country, you can only petition for them to come to the United States if you are over 21. Petitions are also available for stepchildren and siblings. The paperwork for these petitions can be complex, so it’s best to work with an immigration attorney to access this powerful tool for bringing your loved ones to your new home. The attorneys at Immigration & Injury Attorneys have first-hand immigration experience and have succeeded with family petitions cases. Find out if a family petition is right for you by calling our bilingual office today. Our attorneys Keren and Jorge are here for you and will help you every step of the way. THE NEW LAW AGAINST HOLDING YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING IF YOU’RE DRIVING, DON’T TOUCH YOUR PHONE!

On July 1, you’ll want to think twice before reaching for your cell phone in Georgia. It’s already illegal to text and drive, but with this new law in place, it will be illegal to even hold your phone while driving. This July, the bill that Governor Nathan Deal recently signed will go into effect, making it illegal to be in possession of your phone if you are driving. WHAT DOES THIS NEW LAW MEAN FOR YOU? Avoid making a call, sending a text, or having your phone near you while you are driving. This may include using GPS if it means you are interacting with your phone. The new law will likely lead to more traffic stops, so it’s important that you know and follow the rules. Even if you are not making a call, but the phone is in your hand, authorities may find reason to stop you. As officer Lt. Scott Davis told a news station, “The law, as it’s written now, just the mere possession in your hands is considered a distraction, and we’ll be making cases on that … The whole state of Georgia law enforcement in general will be making that case.” KEEP YOUR PHONE OUT OF REACH. What’s one way to make it easier to avoid your phone? Turn it on silent when you are driving. To make it even more difficult to pick up, put your phone in the back seat of your car, where it’s out of reach.

If you have more questions about this new law, attorney Jorge has made a Facebook video to educate people and answer questions. Visit facebook.com/ pg/immigrationinjurylaw to watch the video — just not while you are driving.

If you must take a call, use a hands-free device, like Bluetooth. If you need GPS, consider a window-mounted device or other hands-free options.

3 Fathers Who Risked It All for Their Kids

This Father’s Day, thousands of dads will receive a “No. 1 Dad” mug to sip coffee out of at the office. But the following dads took that “No. 1” to a new level. BRIAN MUNN GAVE HIS SON A LIVER TRANSPLANT. When doctors discovered that baby Caleb Munn had a rare disease called biliary atresia, they told his parents that he was unlikely to survive past age 2 without a liver transplant. Luckily, his father was a perfect match, and he eagerly donated part of his liver in March of 2015 to save his son’s life. GREG ALEXANDER BATTLED A BEAR FOR HIS SON’S LIFE. While camping in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Greg Alexander was startled awake at dawn by the screams of his 16-year-old son, Gabriel. He rushed out of his hammock to see a black bear dragging his son away by the head. Without hesitation, he kicked the beast in the side, and FATHERS WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR THEIR KIDS 3 AWESOME DADS

when that didn’t work, he leapt onto its back and started punching it in the face. When the bear finally released Gabriel, Greg threw rocks until it fled. His son was hurt, but made a full recovery in the hospital over the coming weeks. ARTUR MAGOMEDOV SAVED HIS DAUGHTERS FROM ISIS. Artur Magomedov was devastated to discover that his wife had taken his 3- and 10-year-old daughters from their home in Dagestan under the cover of night, flown to Turkey, and crossed into Syria to join ISIS. But he resolved to get his kids back. After a long, hazardous journey, he arrived in Tabqa to embrace his two daughters. To leave the caliphate — under penalty of death — they hitched a ride to the border one night and crawled along a railway line until they were within 70 meters of the border. Then they ran under fire from Turkish border guards until they could scramble into tall grasses. After some help from the Russian consulate in Istanbul, they made it back home, together again and safe.
