A Labor of Love Meet the Woman Embroidering Her Way to a Better World A while back, I took on a car accident case that ended up introducing me to one of the nicest, most compassionate people I’ve ever met: Cheryl Moore. Cheryl first came into my office with her husband, Bernard, who’d been in a car crash and needed my help. While handling his case, I learned a lot about the two of them. They filled me in on their amazing love story (Cheryl shares it below, just in time for Valentine’s Day) and Cheryl’s passion for embroidery, which she plans to use to create a better world for cancer patients and survivors. Through her little Atlanta-based business, Purple Parrott Creative Design, Cheryl sells custom-embroidered T-shirts, polo shirts, pillows (including neck pillows), hats, scarves, and more. She started out doing embroidery for friends and family, but her late father inspired her to turn her side project into a company. “I’m always designing something, creating something,” Cheryl says. “He always encouraged me to follow my dreams. So, my hobby turned into my passion, and my passion turned into my business! A lot of people can’t say that!” The business is named after her father, whose favorite color was purple and whose last name was Parrott. Today, Cheryl embroiders on any theme her customers ask for, but one of her favorite things to embroider is the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon. She has an entire line of products featuring the design for sale on her website, PurpleParrottCreativeDesigns.com. “My passion is raising awareness for breast cancer. I’ve known a lot of people who have died from it and been sick from it, so that’s my thing right now,” Cheryl says. “My little niece was diagnosed with it and had both breasts and an arm amputated a month ago, even though she isn’t 30 yet. I make these things for her to help her through and let her know it’s going to be okay and that she can do this.”
Someday, Cheryl hopes to take her work a step further and open up a brick-and-mortar store so she can supply breast cancer patients and survivors with everyday items they need, like bras and padding. Right now, in order to get those items, patients often have to go back to the hospital where they were treated. “If you have an actual store to go to that feels like walking into a Macy’s or a J.C. Penney, that makes it easier to avoid the bad memories,” she says.
Cheryl is relentlessly positive, and one of the lights in her life is her husband, Bernard. The pair met in 11th grade in 1981, dated for a bit in their early 20s, and eventually broke up on good terms. They parted ways as friends and didn’t see each other again until 2017, despite living just five minutes apart and attending the same nearby churches they had as children. “God brought us full circle in November 2017. I’ll never forget it, because we spoke on Bernard’s birthday, Nov. 16, 2017. He said, ‘This is the best birthday gift! I’ve been trying to find you!’ We’d both been married and divorced, so he didn’t even know what my new last name was until our high school class started planning a reunion trip. That’s when I saw him on Facebook and called him. He recognized my voice and he said, ‘I’m not letting you go this time!’ We got engaged on May 4, 2018, and married on Oct. 6, 2018. It’s like we picked up right where we left off.”
That just might be the sweetest love story I’ve ever heard.

THE MOON ISN’T MADE OF CHEESE?
The Story Behind the Myth
We’ve all heard the silly statement before: “The moon is made of cheese!” Although we may not fall for it as adults, when we were children, our eyes twinkled with possibility as we gazed up at the full moon and wondered if it really could be made of cheese. While science says no, it’s still an entertaining phrase that holds a valuable lesson for adults and children alike. The motif first appeared in folklore during the High Middle Ages as a proverb invented by a French rabbi. The full phrase is actually “The moon is made of green cheese,” and serves to warn against the dangers of credulity, or the willingness to believe in things that aren’t based on reasonable proof or knowledge. The simplest version of the phrase’s origin tells of a cunning fox that advised a starving wolf to search for food among humans. The wolf listened, and he was attacked by the humans. The wolf escaped, and in his fury, he attempted to kill the fox. To save himself, the fox promised the wolf that he’d show him the location of an abundant food supply. That night, under the light of a full moon, the fox led the wolf to a well and pointed to the reflection of the full moon on the water’s surface deep in the well, claiming it was cheese. The hungry wolf jumped into the well to eat the cheese, forever trapping himself. Thus, the fox successfully escaped the wolf’s wrath. As with any ancient proverb, variations of the story have developed over time, but its message has remained the same: Don’t believe everything you’re told. In today’s world of oversaturated information and advice, this is a valuable tip to follow, no matter what age you are.

Our very own Kevin Patrick has been named one of Georgia’s Legal Elite for 2019! This honor, bestowed by Georgia Trend magazine, is given to only a select group of lawyers each year, and Kevin is thrilled to be among them. In December, Georgia Trend published its list of Legal Elite, a group selected by their peers over a months-long polling period. Kevin ranked as one of the state’s top personal injury litigation and workers’ compensation law attorneys. Overall, lawyers from across Georgia were represented in 16 legal practice areas, ranging from family law to bankruptcy law. For Kevin, the fact that his fellow attorneys chose him for this honor is incredibly meaningful. Vegan Banana Pancakes
Breakfast in bed just got a whole lot yummier with this vegan banana pancake recipe.
Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups flour • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 2 extra ripe bananas, mashed • 1 cup soy milk
• 2 tbsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Cooking spray
Directions 1. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. 2. In a separate bowl, whisk bananas, soy milk, maple syrup, oil, and vanilla together. 3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir. Don’t overmix. Lumps are okay. 4. Spray a heated pancake griddle with cooking spray, and scoop 1/4 cup of the mixture onto the griddle. Repeat until the griddle is filled. 5. After 3 minutes or when bubbles appear, flip each pancake. 6. After each pancake has risen to double its initial height, remove from griddle. Like the Olympics and presidential elections, leap years only occur once every four years, which is why many people look forward to Feb. 29. But there’s a lot that you might not know about this quirk on the calendar. WHY To keep the calendar in sync with Earth’s orbit around the sun, an extra day is added to it every four years. Earth takes exactly 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to orbit the sun. Those extra hours add up over time, so another calendar day becomes necessary. But a leap year doesn’t occur every four years. Adding that extra day still doesn’t quite keep Earth on track, so the calendar skips leap years that occur during century years not divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 won’t be. WHO The odds of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461. That means that of the roughly seven billion people in the world, only about five million of them are “leaplings.” The number of leaplings currently living in the U.S. is roughly 187,000. Some famous leaplings include motivational speaker Tony Robbins, rapper Ja Rule, and singer Mark Foster of Foster the People. However, the most famous leapling is probably Superman. When you invent a super-being, you might as well give him a super-birthday.
WHERE Anthony, Texas/New Mexico (a single town that straddles the two states’ borders), claims the title “Leap Year Capital of the World.” The city throws one massive birthday party for all leaplings but invites everyone to join the celebration. Two leapling neighbors from Anthony began the tradition in 1988, and it’s blossomed into a festival with thousands of participants every four years. It includes banquets, hot air balloons, a carnival, concerts, parades, and more. When you have four years to plan in between each shindig, there’s time to go big. Celebrate this leap year by doing something unusual or new. It’s a special day that doesn’t occur often, so make the most of it by doing something you’ll talk about for another four years.
