AUGUST 2022

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA The Twin Cities is the arts hub of the Midwest. Minnesotans expect live music at every corner, street art embellishing our downtowns, and world class museums and music venues. During the pandemic, many opportunities to experience art in person disappeared. One reason public media remains essential is because we can – and do – serve our communities in ways not available from other media. In response to the pandemic, TPT committed to supporting the Twin Cities arts community, finding ways to provide a stage for artists across Minnesota and free access to first-rate performances for our viewers. STAGE epitomizes TPT’s commitment to the arts. As a lifetime advocate of the arts and arts education, I am so proud that TPT is bringing local artists into your homes. On July 22, the second season of TPT’s STAGE premiered on TPT 2, and we are thrilled to bring you seven more episodes airing Friday evenings at 9pm throughout the rest of the summer. These episodes are also available to watch online at tpt.org/stage or by using the PBS Video App. STAGE showcases diverse local musicians and venues. From rock- band Yam Haus (featured on NBC’s American Song Contest ) to hip- hop artist Nur-D, folk band American Roots Revue, and the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, there is so much to experience. I am also excited that this season is hosted by Natalia Romero Arbelaez, an experienced performer, educator, and musician originally from Colombia. She has passion, experience, and knowledge that makes each episode a celebration of the featured artists and venues. Many thanks to the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund and viewers like you for funding this work. I hope you watch STAGE , and let us know what you think! I also wanted to mention that TPT will be back at the Minnesota State Fair again this year. We will be at our regular booth throughout the whole fair, and Friday, August 26 will feature a live taping of Almanac . We would love to see you stop by and visit us!

Warm Regards, Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

Get to Know Us: Producer Brittany Shrimpton

Join us this month as we speak with Brittany Shrimpton, a producer at TPT. She is a fantastic filmmaker, who is especially keen on projects surrounding the arts. Brittany says: My name is Brittany Shrimpton and I’ve worked at TPT for more than 11 years. What drew me into producing was my love of hearing peoples’ stories and transforming them into video. One thing I’ve especially loved is how making television brings together people from all different industries. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Center for the Art of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School on a mini-series examining healthcare topics through an artistic lens called Art + Medicine . To date, we have completed two shows ( Reflections on the Pandemic

and Speaking of Race) and are in production on a third, Healthy Aging , so keep your eyes peeled this fall for that film! This is just one example of projects I’ve enjoyed working on at TPT, but it’s certainly not the only one. See below a list of some of my favorite projects.

The Younger Faces of Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias By Sheryl Stillman

For many people over 40, experiencing moments of forgetfulness is not all that uncommon and, daresay, almost expected. Often, we blame these random occurrences on information overload, the effects of menopause, or dismiss it as part of the aging process. True, memory loss could result from any of those scenarios, but it may also signal a more serious underlying condition. According to the World Health Organization, Alzheimer's, dementias, and other cognitive impairments have been deemed a public health priority with more than 55 million affected worldwide. In the U.S., approximately six million people currently live with Alzheimer's, the most prevalent of the dementias. While the majority fall into the 65+ age group, a growing number, about 10%, are experiencing Young-Onset Alzheimer's (also known as Early- Onset), between the ages of 30 and 60. "Things started taking me two to three times longer to do and it really hit me something was wrong when presenting at a meeting. I completely lost what I was supposed to say," said Deb Jobe, 56, of St. Louis, Missouri. When Jobe was 53 years old, her husband noticed she often forgot things. "I took care of our checkbook and missed paying bills here and there," said Jobe. At the time, she worked for a global human capital management firm and was responsible for clients' overall customer experience. After that fateful meeting, Jobe decided it was time to see her primary care physician (PCP). She credits her doctor with not discounting her symptoms as menopause and sending her for a neuropsychological consult.

Deb Jobe and her husband Jon

A battery of cognitive assessments revealed Jobe has Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), progressive degeneration of the brain's outer layer. This specific type of dementia most often affects those between the ages of 50 and 65. “Things started taking me two to three times longer to do and it really hit me something was wrong when presenting at a meeting. I completely lost what I was supposed to say.” "I had my perception of what Alzheimer's looked like, and it certainly wasn't me," said Jobe. "If we can dispel what Alzheimer's looks like, share the many faces, and help people recognize symptoms as early as possible, they can have a higher quality of life for longer. I am a person still providing value — don't put me in a box yet."

The New Retirement Role Models: Literary Characters By Emily Wilson

When Elly Griffiths (the pen name of Domenica de Rosa) started writing her series about forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway, who lives in a remote cottage by the sea in Norfolk, England, she made the main character about her age at the time, nearing 40. Galloway teaches at the university there and has a complicated love life involving Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson, whom she sometimes works with as an expert on bones. The first book in the series, "The Crossing Places," came out in 2009. In the 13th book, "The Night Hawks," retirement is a continuing plot point. Galloway is almost 50, and although Nelson is only 51, he's under a lot of pressure from his boss to retire after decades on the force, but he can't imagine himself without his job. "I think it's interesting that we define ourselves very much by our jobs," said Griffiths, now 58, of Brighton, England. "I'm lucky I'm in a job where you don't have to retire." Nowadays, a lot of people don't so much retire as go on to the next thing, Griffiths said. Her husband left his job as a corporate lawyer to study archaeology, and now he's considering a third career making wine in Italy.

young children, and it was less sweet. But it gave me the idea for Ruth, so it worked out for both of us."

Griffiths thinks crime fiction does a fairly good job of having older characters. Last year, she and 11 other bestselling authors wrote short stories featuring Agatha Christie's legendary detective Miss Marple.

Miss Marple in Miss Marple: Greenshaw’s Folly from PBS Re-reading Christie's books to prepare, Griffiths says she was struck by all the characters past age 60. Ian Rankin, the Scottish writer, has written a series of bestselling books featuring the detective John Rebus. Rebus officially retired in 2007's "Exit Music," but he has come back to investigate cold cases. Rankin has said that Rebus feels real to him, and that means he needs to age.

“I think it's very interesting that we define ourselves very much by our jobs. I'm lucky I'm in a job where you don't have to retire.”

"When we first met, he mentioned he'd always wanted to be an archeologist," Griffiths said. "I thought, 'That's so sweet.' But when he went back to university to be an archeologist, we had two
