Immersion demands expansion plan
BROCKVILLE | The French immersion pro- gram for Upper Canada district schools has proven a big success and is ready for the next phase. Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) want administration to start work outlining a plan for expanding the French immersion program for district schools. The decision follows on a report filed during the Feb. 26 board meeting on district progress in meeting the recommen- dations in the 2008 Boundary 2020 report on French language programming for Up- per Canada district. “We have reached all our gals regarding Early French Immersion programming,”stat- ed Greg Pietersma, UCDSB chairman, “the most important of which is that students have access to the program throughout all of our communities. Due to this successful implementation, we are in a position now
to look at building and expanding on our success.” Planning and Research Officer Phil Dawes and Upper Canada Leger Centre Executive Director Tim Mills presented trustees with the report, 2014 French as a Second Lan- guage Review, which noted that the dis- trict’s Early French Immersion program (EFI) had spread throughout the UCDSB. Trustees directed Education Director Da- vid Thomas to prepare a report for later in the spring outlining key benchmarks for improving participation and support for French immersion in district schools and so guarantee that all Upper Canada district students, both present and future, graduate with an EFI certificate. Thomas will also develop a process for ex- panding the EFI program to other schools in other districts if there is demand for the UCDSB system.

The St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Intermediate Band was awarded a silver standard at the Capital Region MusicFest, Feb. 20. Under the direction of Marc Larocque, the 41-member band made their MusicFest debut. The band is comprised of students in grades 7 and 8, almost all of whom have started learning their instruments last September, and took advantage of the chance to practice at home and during spare moments at school in the band room.

L’École secondaire catholique L’Escale received a mark of 6, a slight drop from its 2011- 2012 ranking. The French-language Catholic school is rated 406 overall. St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, of Russell, and l’École publique Le Sommet, of Hawkesbury, are the tops of all schools in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell and the United Counties of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry. They are tied for 48th position. The Fraser Institute bases its assessments on a combination of information, including data compiled by the Education Quality and Accountability Office and socio-economic fac- tors.
