ENERGY At Frontier Co-op, our engineering teams work to ensure we are using all resources, including energy, as efficiently as possible. As a perfect example of how doing good, works, this commitment is not only to ensure our operations are as environmentally respon- sible as possible, but also results in cost savings for the co-op. 100% of our non-solar electricity usage is offset by the purchase of Green-e eligible or Green-e certified renewable energy credits (RECs). As the company has grown, we’ve standardized the use of efficient lighting and HVAC equipment. However, this is counter-balanced with the need to maintain best-in-class food safety practices through steam pasteurization and more frequent washdown cycles. As we continue to meet high standards for food safe- ty, we hope to be able to identify ways to increase efficiencies in utilities consumption at the same time. WATER Most of our water usage is from our steam pasteuriza- tion units and equipment washdowns. Steam pasteuri- zation is the only natural pasteurization process in the spice industry and the only one allowed for certi- fied organic products. In addition, the highly controlled process of steam injection in a vacuum minimizes impact on the taste, color, and aroma of the spices. The most common alternatives, irradiation and ethylene oxide treatment, pose other risks beyond just their use of natural resources. By utilizing steam pasteurization, we’re protecting our workers, our consumers, and our planet.

EMISSIONS We monitor our co-op’s greenhouse gas footprint and offset our Scope I and II emissions which are directly related to our business. Our calculation methodology: We offset 100% of our non-solar electricity consumption (Scope II) through the purchase of Green-e eligible or Green-e certified RECs (renewable energy credits). Additionally, we purchase VERs (verified emissions reductions) to offset 100% of the emissions generated by energy produced on-site through the burning of natural gas and diesel (Scope I emissions), and the emissions generated by our distribution shipping and employee travel (Scope III).

Target: 100% of Scope I and II emissions produced through renewable means or offset through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or Verified Emission Reductions (VERs).
