Frontier Co-op 2022 Biennial CSR Report

IMPACT of our PACKAGING

As a consumer packaged goods company who produces tens of millions of units annually, it’s important for us to be cognizant of the impact of our packaging. We track our packaging sustainability via three metrics: recyclability of that packaging at end of life, amount of recycled content incorporated, and the total amount of packaging material we use.

Targets: Maintain recycled content of packaging at 36%. Maintain recyclability of packaging at 89%.

As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and How2Recycle ® , we closely follow industry discussions regarding recyclability claims. Industry best practice is shifting toward a more holistic approach that considers not only whether a material is, in theory, recyclable, but also the likelihood that the package will actually make it through the recycling stream and be processed effectively. This includes consideration of both size and material, rather than just the packaging material alone, and the availability of recycling capabilities and capacity across the country. Given these criteria, we no longer include small plastic packaging components (e.g., plastic caps) in our calculation of total recyclable packaging.

HOW2RECYCLE ® In 2019, we joined How2Recycle ® , a program of the GreenBlue Institute dedicated to reducing confusion related to recycling by providing a standardized labeling system for products. How2Recycle’s clear, concise labels help consumers quickly and easily understand how to responsibly discard a product at end of life. For more information on the program, visit http://how2recycle.info. We are proud to share that these labels can now be found on our entire Plant Boss brand, all of our distri- bution packaging, and will be included on all Simply Organic products as of our 2022 rebrand.

* Due to supply chain challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, our FY21 purchases reflect a higher purchase rate than normal, and decreased recycled content rate as our team worked to keep up with significant swings in consumer demand. FY22 reflects an evening out of this trend.
