MAIL HANDLING PROTOCOL
The likelihood of receiving a package or letter containing suspicious or harmful substances is remote, however, it could happen. It is important to be vigilant when receiving incoming mail. Indicators of suspicious mail/packages: • Foreign mail, especially when the recipient is not expecting such mail; • Hand-written or poorly typed address; • No return address; • Misspelling; • Distorted writing or cut-and-paste; • Restrictive labeling (personal, private, rush, etc.); • Unusual size or shape or weight; and • Protruding wires, foil, odor, stains or discoloration. What to do if you receive a suspicious parcel in the mail: • Remain calm. Notify your supervisor in person. DO NOT USE A CELL PHONE or walkie-talkie type radio. The supervisor or MOD will determine whether to call 911. • Stop handling the package or envelope. • Isolate the package or envelope and leave the area, closing the door. Secure the area to prevent others from entering. • If you detect smoke, visible fumes, or strange odors from the package, or if people in the vicinity exhibit illness, activate the fire alarm and evacuate the building. See EVACUATION / LOCKDOWN / CLOSURE .
