ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS
HURRICANE/CYCLONE, TORNADO, or FLOOD These guidelines apply to any Adverse Weather Condition. See FLOOD at the end of this section for flood-specific safety instructions. ALERT • When an alert is received that a tropical storm, hurricane, tornado or threat of flood has developed, the General Manager should inform the entire staff of the potential event to ensure minimal loss to guests and hotel. • A Crisis Management Team Member shall be assigned to follow Weather Bureau bulletins, advisories, public news sources, and track the status or path of the adverse weather condition threatening the hotel. • Establish a Command Center to serve as the nerve center during the emergency. At least one AM radio with sufficient batteries should be available in the Command Center and sufficient cell phones to enable communication between Associates in other areas of the hotel. A two-way radio is also recommended to maintain continuous communication between the Command Center, engineering, and security staff in the event cell service is disrupted by the storm. PREPARATION • Begin preparations to secure the hotel and prepare for the event. Some recommended actions to be considered are universal, regardless of the nature of the event: 1. The GM will determine if certain Associates should move into the hotel, if time permits. 2. If these Associates are concerned about the safety of family members at home, the GM may send them to their homes in shifts, to bring family members back to the hotel. 3. Assign an Associate to ensure lanterns, light sticks, and/or flashlights with fresh batteries, hand sanitizers, and first aid supplies are placed in strategic areas for easy accessibility, such as the front desk, kitchens, restaurants, lounges, etc. 4. Assign primary and alternate Associates to each role if resources and personnel permit. If resources and personnel are limited, the team leader can assign multiple functional responsibilities to individual Associates. 5. The Food and Beverage Department should ensure there are sufficient food, and beverage supplies to last several days, such as: a. Water (bottled or consider filling guestroom bathtubs) b. Juices c. Dry milk d. Dry cereals e. Breads f. Sandwich Products g. Canned and dry foods h. Portion-packet condiments i. Pureed foods
