hat is your most notable project, deal or transac- tion? One of my favorite proj- ects that I worked on recently was a mixed-use healthcare facility for Inova in Fairfax, VA. It involved replacing the infrastructure of an existing 9-story office building with new systems to accommodate two floors of inpatient rehab with medical office building functions on the remaining floors. The project presented numerous challenges such as dealing with existing condi- tions, going from a business W

how the buildings we design positively affect the health of people in the community. How do you contribute to your company and/or the industry? Since my first days as an intern, I have been raised in the healthcare en- vironment. I really enjoy this type of work, and am able to be a technical resource for those in and outside of our firm due to my experience. I really enjoy listening to and working with clients to determine the best approach for their healthcare facilities. Who or what has been the

One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career is delegation of work. As someone who is detail-oriented and takes a lot of pride in my work, it was very hard and important for me to learn that I cannot do everything on my own. My success has been con- tingent on training and build- ing a collaborative team to work withme, ultimately resulting in a better project. A good group of people can be much more ef- fective than one person alone. What was the most defin- ing moment for you? One of my first projects out of college was to oversee construction of a 140,000 s/f cancer center with pediatric and adult infu- sion as well as a state-of-the- art intra-operative MRI suite. strongest influence in your career? My first boss, Mary Alcaraz, has been an excep- tional influence for my career. From the first day I walked in the door as an intern, she inspired and challenged me to not get caught in the status quo but rather be progressive and implement new technologies and design strategies to further the field and reduce energy consumption. She always made sure to keep this in the frame of client needs and wants. Tell us how and when you began your career in the profession you are in, about your current position and why you choose the field/ profession you are in today? My interest in architectural en- gineering began in high school while taking drafting and design courses. Those courses lead me to pursue a degree in Architectural Engineering at Drexel University. Through their co-op program, I gained real work experience at excel- lent engineering firms and fell in love with electrical system design for buildings. When I graduated in 2013, I already had two years of experience and was able to hit the ground running. I love how electrical engineering ties into so many other systems in the building which requires a lot of coordi- nation and learning how all the different systems in a build- ing operate. I feel this makes every day a little different and constantly provides challenges, new and old.
