2023-24

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR On behalf of the board and staff of Capital

Harmony Works, we are very pleased to report that during this year of leadership transition, our mission at Capital Harmony Works remains stronger than ever. Following the strategic merger of the longstanding community organizations Trenton Music Makers, Trenton Children’s Chorus, Music for the Very Young, and Learning Academy two years ago, we have expanded both in numbers and scope.

In the nonprofit sector, strong missions endure unexpected challenges. We remain deeply grateful for the invaluable service of longtime music educator and leader Paul Chapin, who stepped down as CEO in June. The Board of Trustees is now focused on finding the next leader for Capital Harmony Works, someone who can guide us into the bright future that lies ahead. Interim Executive Director Carolyn Biondi has been instrumental in easing this transition, allowing the Board to thoughtfully consider the right leader for this pivotal moment in our organization’s journey. Our greatest assets at Capital Harmony Works are our dedicated teachers and program leaders. With a committed staff of 23 teaching artists—many of whom have been with us since our founding—we are shaping the futures of over 500 young people in Trenton and surrounding communities. As we look towards 2025 and beyond, we are determined to serve even more children in additional locations, providing them with the joy of music and the countless benefits it brings, including cognitive development, social and emotional resilience, and a sense of community and belonging. We invite you to join us on this journey. Your support is essential as we continue to expand our impact and cultivate the next generation of musicians. Together, we can make a remarkable difference in our community through the power of music education. Our current enrollment exceeds 100 students grades K - 12 in the orchestra and chorus, and our early childhood music education now reaches 400 preschoolers annually. Highlighted here in our annual report are local performances that enrich our community and many opportunities for our students to broaden their horizons with performances outside of the Trenton area. Not only did the discipline of regular rehearsals and practice develop our students' musical talents, but we supported 9 students with scholarships to summer camps and university education. And the benefits of our programs are not limited to music education: from hot meals that nourish their bodies to a caring community that nourishes their spirits, Capital Harmony Works supports the well-being of our students through and through.

With our gratitude, Genevieve Thayer and Mathias Hemberger

It has been a true honor to serve as the Interim Executive Director over the past 6 months. While I have longtime experience as an executive director, this is my first leadership experience in the area of youth arts education. What a joy it is to see the children focused on developing their skills and having fun making music together! The staff at Capital Harmony Works, many exceptional musicians themselves, are passionately committed to teaching our students and ensuring that they reap all of the cognitive, social, and psychological benefits that music education provides. It will be my pleasure to ensure a smooth transition for the next leader of this fine organization, and I look forward to witnessing the exciting next chapter in store for Capital Harmony Works! A NOTE FROM OUR INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

-Carolyn Biondi

LOOKING AHEAD AT CAPITAL HARMONY WORKS...

Expand partnership opportunities for the Trenton Children’s Chorus and Trenton Music Makers to partner with choral and orchestral entities as well as host guest artists, fostering growth and artistic development. This also includes Music for the Very Young increasing preschool partnerships. Launch an enrollment campaign aimed at attracting new students to TMM and TCC programs, with a special focus on engaging families within Trenton which includes providing transportation to remove barriers from access. Increase scholarship opportunities not only to transform individual lives but also strengthen the collective future of our community, cultivating a new generation of empowered, creative, and resilient leaders. Scholarships support students' educational and artistic journeys, helping them gain skills, confidence, and connections that can lead to further educational and career opportunities in music and beyond. Build fundraising capacity to secure corporate sponsorships and increase major gifts, supporting the organization's continued growth. Create a unified home for our programs: Work toward finding a dedicated space where all programs can operate under one roof, fostering greater collaboration, community, and continuity for our students and families.

Research shows that music education has a positive impact on social and cognitive development of children. And these effects are long lasting – better hearing, better motor skills, improved memory, better verbal and literacy skills. 34 Years of Youth Choir Excellence- An Ongoing Capital City Legacy

Trenton Children’s Chorus has much to be proud of. Founded in 1989 as “Covenant Singers” by the remarkable Sue Ellen Page and a dedicated team at Nassau Presbyterian Church, the vision of a vibrant youth choir in the Capital City sparked enthusiasm among families both within and beyond Trenton. From wide-eyed, fidgety kindergarteners to proud, poised high school singers, the Trenton Children’s Chorus has inspired audiences throughout the state and region, showcasing the power and beauty of young voices. During the 2023-24 season, TCC expanded its engagements beyond the typical performance schedule. In December 2023, the Training Choir ushered in the holiday season with a festive program of carols at Artworks in Trenton, as part of the Mill Hill Holiday House Tour. In February 2024, TCC launched its inaugural “Soul Food and Song” event, a celebration of Black History Month led by our talented choristers. The program featured a variety of choral and instrumental pieces, poetry, and historical narratives presented by individuals and small groups, culminating in a community dinner with “soul food” prepared by the Black-owned restaurant, The Big Easy . The season concluded with a Juneteenth performance alongside the Capital Singers of Trenton and the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, as well as an invitation to perform at the historic Riverside Church in New York City.

Laying A Musical Foundation for Thousands of “Tiny Trentonians”

Music for the Very Young honors children of all abilities and backgrounds, providing the opportunity to interact with music and movement activities led by a professional teaching artist on a weekly basis. MVY teaching artists then extend the impact of weekly sessions by mentoring classroom teachers and assistants to connect the music lessons to their classroom curriculum and weave MVY activities into the school day. Impact is further extended to the children’s home and family environment by being provided with the music for home use. Adult caregivers are also invited to participate in special events, known as Family Music Parties, with their children and the MVY teaching artists and classroom teachers at school. Rare in music education programs, Music for the Very Young is adaptable to ALL students. MVY provides adjustable activities provided by professional teaching artists, making it possible for typically developing students and students with diverse developmental and physical diagnoses to engage, interact, and grow. New learning opportunities are scaffolded throughout the year in response to students’ growth, and they rise to the challenge in the most powerful ways, gaining musical and early education skills, as well as confidence in their abilities. MVY also enjoys a long-standing relationship with the Early Childhood program at Katzenbach School for the Deaf. During the 2023/24 School Year, Music for the Very Young provided: - weekly music sessions to 300 students in 3 school districts over 30-week residencies - weekly mentorship and collaboration with 45 classroom teachers and assistants - modifications for students with disabilities and exceptional abilities - take-home materials to foster a home/school connection - 10 school-wide celebrations - 30 Family Music Parties

What impact does MVY make? Continuous music education is proven to drive positive outcomes for children from an early age. MVY provides students with ongoing music engagement during the critical birth-to-five year old period, a period of growth where music exposure amplifies brain development . Providing music education in pre-k classes enhances: -Detection and prediction of patterns; -Understanding and use of language;

Meet our Program Director, Kelsey Swanson

-Spatial-temporal reasoning; -Early reading development; -Lower rates of toxic stress -Neuroplasticity; -Kindergarten readiness; -Better grades; -Higher rates of college attainment; -Civic-minded behavior

Kelsey joined the team in 2015 as the Project Coordinator for our Trenton Makes - Words! partnership project with the Children’s Home Society of NJ and the New Jersey State Museum, then as a Music for the Very Young Teaching Artist, and now the Early Childhood Program Director since 2020. From the beginning she brought to the role deep knowledge of children, from her years as a Montessori educator, a youth sexuality educator, a diversity and inclusion facilitator, a Music Together teacher, and a mentor for youth-led tutoring programs. She loves to support young learners, colleagues, school partners, and families through continuous dialogue and life-long learning. Kelsey holds a B.A. in Sociology and Gender Studies from Manchester University and a Master of Education in Global Education Policy from the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign.

Programs like Music for the Very Young are deemed essential to the NJ core curriculum for public schools and proven as an effective means for students to attain better educational outcomes. However, funding is not provided by school districts and must be attained elsewhere. Securing funding for preschool music and movement programs remains a challenge in urban New Jersey school districts. In order to grow this critical program, MVY seeks additional funding to reach more students, teachers, and families in the Trenton area.

High Access, and High Expectations

In the early 2000s, a remarkable trend emerged in the Northern Hemisphere as massive youth orchestras began to flourish in cities and towns across Venezuela. Known as “El Sistema,” this concept became widely recognized among educators. Its core principles were straightforward: create access in communities where it is lacking, provide necessary resources, and gather young people for intensive periods to foster rapid skill development. The philosophy behind El Sistema emphasizes that when an ensemble thrives, it reflects society at its best, as all members work collaboratively toward a shared goal. In 2013, the Superintendent of Trenton Public Schools, who had a background in modern dance, prioritized the revitalization of the arts in schools and partnered with us to establish an after school orchestra. We began our journey in 2015 with three teachers and thirty violinists at one school. By 2021, Trenton Music Makers had expanded to include over 200 violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists from 26 public, charter, and parochial schools in Trenton. We consolidated our operations from four different locations into a single, high-powered orchestra site located at Westminster Presbyterian Church, a vibrant community hub in the East Ward, bridging Chambersburg and the Wilbur District. This October, we completed our first full year with our Percussion Ensemble, a vision of our Artistic Director aimed at creating the “Trenton Sound.” The ensemble blends the rich rhythms representative of students’ diverse cultures with Western classical music and string instruments. Our percussion ensemble has proven to be a distinct and wonderful addition to the TMM identity, allowing young percussionists to perform alongside the orchestra, grandly complementing our string offerings.

“I know that this is what I love to do the most and that I am going to be a professional violinist.” Lydia, 11 (Violin) What have you learned about yourself by being a musician in TMM?

The Trenton Chamber Orchestra (TCO) was established in 2022 as the premier ensemble within Trenton Music Makers, showcasing our most advanced students. TCO members are not only proficient musicians with strong practice habits; they also serve as role models and ambassadors for Capital Harmony Works. Students in TCO receive private lessons and training in chamber music, and they engage in rehearsals and performances alongside teaching artists. This immersive experience inspires them and allows them to interact in a professional environment, providing valuable performance opportunities. The formation of TCO marks a significant advancement in the quality of our organization by creating a pathway for Trenton Music Makers students to pursue careers as professional musicians. This ensemble aims to equip them with the essential training needed to realize their dreams while serving as a leading reference ensemble nationwide, demonstrating the power of youth development through high-level music-making. This past July, 18 of our students went to the Princeton Blairstown Center for a weekend with fellow El Sistema-inspired programs sponsored by El Sistema New Jersey Alliance. This intensive experience included rehearsals and recreational activities, culminating into a final performance at the Princeton Blairstown Center. Additionally, Cindy Lorenzana (viola) traveled to Traverse City, Michigan, as she was chosen to participate in the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp for six weeks, being the first of our students to achieve this accomplishment, making Capital Harmony Works history! At the same time, Hans Jean Giles (cello) trekked to Maine for the New England Music Camp, to receive intensive instruction in orchestra, chamber music, and private

Meet our Artistic Director, Melissa Niño A Venezuela native, Melissa grew up with the renowned music method originated in Venezuela El Sistema. At the age of 6, she was selected by Professor Emil Friedman to join the prestigious school Colegio Emil Friedman in which she was trained in violin, chamber music and orchestra. She participated at the Juan Bautista Plaza violin competition at the age of 14 and is a former member of the Virtuosis de Caracas ensemble. Melissa is an alumni of the world recognized institution Interlochen Centre for the Arts in Michigan, USA and a former member of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and The World Orchestra. A graduate of Indiana University South Bend and Arizona State University, she is the founder of the TrèsFemme Trio, a chamber music ensemble that performed unknown compositions by women composers that debuted in the Veranos de la Villa Festival in Spain. Apart from the classical world, Melissa has collaborated with artists from other genres such as BB King, Marc Anthony, The Monomes among others. In addition to performing, Melissa has a remarkable pedagogical career teaching violin, chamber music and orchestra in countries including USA, Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong. Niño is the Co-founder of El Sistema Hong Kong and is also one of the first El Sistema inspired educators to launch an orchestra program for the elderly population of Hong Kong.

lessons, with the opportunity to attend performances by world-class artists.

What have you learned with TMM that you are most proud of? “I have been here since the 1st grade and now I’m in the 4th. I have learned how to read music and can play at least 10 songs.” John, 9 (Violin)
