Laying A Musical Foundation for Thousands of “Tiny Trentonians”

Music for the Very Young honors children of all abilities and backgrounds, providing the opportunity to interact with music and movement activities led by a professional teaching artist on a weekly basis. MVY teaching artists then extend the impact of weekly sessions by mentoring classroom teachers and assistants to connect the music lessons to their classroom curriculum and weave MVY activities into the school day. Impact is further extended to the children’s home and family environment by being provided with the music for home use. Adult caregivers are also invited to participate in special events, known as Family Music Parties, with their children and the MVY teaching artists and classroom teachers at school. Rare in music education programs, Music for the Very Young is adaptable to ALL students. MVY provides adjustable activities provided by professional teaching artists, making it possible for typically developing students and students with diverse developmental and physical diagnoses to engage, interact, and grow. New learning opportunities are scaffolded throughout the year in response to students’ growth, and they rise to the challenge in the most powerful ways, gaining musical and early education skills, as well as confidence in their abilities. MVY also enjoys a long-standing relationship with the Early Childhood program at Katzenbach School for the Deaf. During the 2023/24 School Year, Music for the Very Young provided: - weekly music sessions to 300 students in 3 school districts over 30-week residencies - weekly mentorship and collaboration with 45 classroom teachers and assistants - modifications for students with disabilities and exceptional abilities - take-home materials to foster a home/school connection - 10 school-wide celebrations - 30 Family Music Parties
