deavors. We must not let past failures hinder or prevent our utmost effort for the Lord in the present day. We Should Forget Past Troubles Which Are Food for Discouragement Isa. 44:20 The Christian life is not always one of ease and comfort. One of the most real things in the world is the enmity of the human heart both for Christ and for His Word and His people. Satan is not pleased at all with any genuine Christian effort. All who are engaged in the ministry of the Word have trouble. If we med itate on those troubles or if we spend our time grieving on past sorrows of any kind, we are of little use to God. We must forget those sorrows, dry the tears and plunge into the service of the King. We Should Forget Personal Injuries Which Are Food for Bitterness Deut. 29:18 No Christian can be happily en gaged in Spirit-led ministry if the heart is filled with bitterness toward others. Many feed on wormwood and gall. Their minds become saturated with hatred. If we would be used of God, if we would run the race well, if we would see fruitfulness in our testimony, then we must forget bit terness and those injuries which may have been very real and throw off that load around the heart and the neck. Let us forget our injuries that the mind may be occupied with Christ. Paul had many real things to for get. Someone has said that when he went to a city, he did not see what kind of hotels they had but rather what kind of jails. Much of his time was spent in suffering. He was re jected by the Jews, persecuted by the Gentiles, and punished by the offi cers. His body bore the marks of much physical violence. His soul was in distress because of the wickedness of his own people and the darkness of the Gentiles. He was determined that none of this should hinder his zeal for God nor his love for the Lord and His people. We Should Forget Our Victories Which Are Food for Pride Luke 9:62 Christians who are successful in the service of the King are often tempted by the devil to rest on their past achievements and forget that the battle is still in progress. The human heart likes to dwell on its greatness as revealed in past success. This hin ders present victories and prevents future progress. Paul would not have his mind burdened with that prob lem. His victories were wonderful but his desires were for a greater manifestation o f God’s power. We Should Forget Our Failures Which Are Food for Defeat Prov. 24:16 There are Christians who have an “ inferiority complex.” They have tried and failed so they are afraid to make another attempt. Having been made a laughingstock, they fear a repetition of the experience. This should not be the case. Every child who learns to walk falls many times but rises again. Those who sing in public improve with practice. The doctor has more remedies after years o f experience than in his first en- D E C E M B E R , 1 9 5 0
