Guy Desjardins relaxes a bit after a busy 2016

city, the business community and others to maintain pressure on both the federal and provincial governments for funding for the future four-laning of the highway link between Rockland and Orléans. Mayor Desjardins noted the city has been successful during the past year in adding to village recreation facilities in the rural areas with new splash pads in Bourget and Clarence Creek and a refurbished tennis court setup in Hammond. “Lots of roads also fixed up,” he said, ad- ding that the public works priority schedule will see the Old Highway 17 road running through Clarence Point rebuilt “from one end to the other” creating “a nice, beautiful (river) road for bikes and motorcycles.” Road work will continue as a priority for 2017 according to Desjardins. Improve- ment on St-Joseph Street in Rockland will continue and themayor expects to seemore backcountry roads upgraded, along with development of secondary water line loops to safeguard water supply to all the villages.
Guy Desjardins’ calendar was very full during 2016. Besides his duties as mayor for the City of Clarence-Rockland, he was also responsible for all of Prescott and Rus- sell as warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell. In between all of that he also had his own Clarence Creek area farm to manage. “It’s looking pretty good,” Desjardins said, with a chuckle, when asked how he finds the new year. “It (2016) was also a pretty good year.” Right now Desjardins is working out de- tails for the upcoming Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) annual general meeting later in the season. In past years OGRA has been combined with the Rural OntarioMu- nicipal Association (ROMA) annual meeting but last year disputes between the organizers have resulted in the two events splitting off into separate sessions with ROMA following a few weeks after OGRA. “We’re going to both of them this year,” said Desjardins, adding that he is not happy about the split, which just adds to themuni- cipal business travel budget. Desjardins and city staffwill do an evalua- tion of which event proves themore produc- tive for gettingmeetings with provincial offi- cials on key concerns of Clarence-Rockland and thenmake recommendations at a later council session.Themayor expressed liking
