PASTORAL CARE Harper House

the day because of illness after qualifying for seven finals. Similar to previous years, it was pleasing to see such a large turnout of Harper boys competing in trials and heats, especially for events where they might not have had much experience. It is this enthusiasm that is fostered within the culture of the House, and I look forward to seeing a similar turnout (and result) in the 2023 version of Athletics Sports Day, with parents involved. As was typical for many New Zealand schools in early 2022, Covid-19 restrictions disrupted so many things for the House. Combined with shorter lunchtimes and earlier finishes, it seemed like Term 1 had limited opportunities for the House to get

together and enjoy each other’s company. Despite the disruption, collectively Harper students continued to push themselves academically and performed at high levels across the board. It was a credit to the boys that many were able to strive to achieve and navigate the disruption. In Term 2, Harper House – like all the other Houses – had many students away because of illness, injuries, camps and tournaments. For most of the term, the House was missing 25 to 30 students per day, and with a large number of our traditional interhouse sports postponed or cancelled, there were limited opportunities for the boys to really bond as a collective.

Housemaster: Dr Neil de Joux Deputy Housemaster/Mentor: Emily Priest Mentors: Graeme Christey, Ginny Patterson, Katie Southworth, Andrew Taylor Head of House: Gabriel Gallaway Deputy Head of House: Johnny Bullen For Harper House, 2022 can be marked by several new occurrences, as well as several traditions being well-maintained. A new Housemaster and Deputy Housemaster stepped into their roles, requiring time for the boys to adapt to new leadership in the House after eight years with former Housemaster Matt Cortesi. However, the transition was smooth because of the ability of the boys to change with the times, and all year groups contributed to a welcoming environment for both students and staff alike. Term 1 started with the continuation of our success in athletics, with the House lifting the athletics trophy again in a strong performance. Standout efforts from Fynn Harrington, Benji Ward and PJ Palamo again pushed our performance as a House and contributed to a large number of points, while Lachlan McVicar was unfortunate to miss out on
