Perhaps because of that, the House Music competition was viewed as a clear goal – a light at the end of the tunnel moment where we could come together as one. Our Year 13 students showed strong leadership in the weeks leading up to the event, finding times to practise when possible and sometimes with smaller groups than desired. Despite the fluctuating numbers, a final push in the week of the event ironed out some of the kinks. The night itself had several special moments, with House newcomer Year 12 student Max Harris delivering a standout performance on the drums to drive the choir, while Year 13 student Jasper Johnson conducted the boys with enthusiasm and energy. However, the real magic was offstage, with the entire House gathering before the event in a tight, cramped space backstage where Year 13 student Henry King delivered a powerful speech that set the boys in the right frame of mind to deliver their best performance of Pompeii by Bastille. This helped push Harper to its first win in the competition for about 20 years, and was a special moment for everyone. Term 3 featured two main events for the House. Henry King and William Olsson had an ambitious goal of placing in the top three with an original play – a rare feat. Producing their own play had the added benefit of being able to create positions for all who wanted to be take part, and the result was an ensemble cast of 30 boys from all year groups and with different abilities taking part both on and off the stage. These boys produced a funny, well-paced and
well-choreographed performance of The Wolf of Gloucester Street , to claim 3rd overall – a fantastic achievement. The House Haka competition practices took place while senior students were away because of exam commitments, meaning that it was a time for our younger leaders to shine.
