for the Canterbury A Cricket Squad for 2022–2023. Liam Jack was named in the New Zealand Schools Rugby team that competed in the Quadrangular tournament in Hamilton against the Fiji Schools side, the NZ Barbarians U18 side, and the NZ Ma¯ori U18 side. Rylind Wheeler had an impressive year in swimming. Competing in the South Island Long Course Swimming Championships in the 13–14 age group, Rylind won bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events, and finished a commendable 4th equal in the 200m breaststroke. Rylind also competed in the National Age Group Swimming Championships, setting personal bests (PB) in the 50m and 100m breaststroke to make the finals and finish 5th. In the 200m breaststroke, he claimed the bronze medal, smashing his PB by eight seconds. Rylind also competed for College at the Canterbury Schools Swimming Competition, placing 1st in the U14 50m breaststroke. At the South Island Secondary Schools Swimming Championships and racing in six events, he won gold in the 100m individual medley, and the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Competing in the New Zealand Schools Triathlon, Henry Hiatt was in 25th place after the swim, before powering through the cycling and running sections to finish 15th in the U16 race. Henry will again be eligible for the U16 section next year. Kieran Christey represented Christ’s College’s clay target shooting team at the national event held at the Canterbury Clay Target Club. Kieran won two 3rd-place medals in his grade in the single rise and single barrel contests. After the nationals, Kieran moved up to the next grade as a result of shooting more than 90% of his targets. Kieran, along with the full team, also competed at the North Island Secondary School Clay Target Shooting Championships at the Waikato Clay Target Club. In total, 194 competitors from 35 schools took part. Kieran recorded the top College result in the single rise and the points score, and the single barrel.

The small vocal group – Oscar Stove, Yusef Elnahas, Tom Whitteker, Angus Gifford, Alexander Law and Angus Whitteker – sang the iconic I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. It was an outstanding rendition, with Oscar Stove the lead vocalist. Jacobs House won the sought-after titles for best Backing Band and Small Vocal Group. REACTION House Plays Festival The House Plays event was held over two nights, with half of the Houses performing on Tuesday night and the remainder on Thursday night. We enjoyed two entertaining nights, with plenty of laughs and fun, along with wonderful storytelling. Jacobs House peformed Beauty is a Beast , directed by Yusef Elnahas. It was a very entertaining performance. While we did not feature in the major awards, Tinura Gajamange won an Actors Award for Jacobs. Well done to all those involved, on stage and off. Cross Country The cross country was held in Hagley Park, with four age groups competing. All the boys were involved, putting in a good effort. Some boys finished in the top 25, including U14 – Bruno Kearney 13th, Darce Terpstra 16th and Rylind Wheeler 18th; Junior – Henry Hiatt 1st, Fletcher Tapper 14th, Hunter Hartel 16th Ben Crawford 21st and

Alex Rutherford 23rd; Intermediate – Max Howard 8th, Finn McCormack- Young 16th, and Ollie Nicholson 25th; and Senior – Jaspar Thomas 5th and George van Leeuwen 24th.

INDIVIDUAL/GROUP HIGHLIGHTS Several boys performed

exceptionally well in various areas. Jordan Braithwaite, Liam Jack and Matthew Lewis were members of the College A Basketball side, winning the Thomson Trophy being named South Island Secondary Schools Champion, and – for the first time – 2022 National Secondary Schools Champion. Ben Breitmeyer, Jordan Braithwaite, George Ryan and Matthew Lewis were members of the 1st XI Cricket team, winning the Two-Day Cup Competition and retaining the Heathcote Williams Shield. They also won the national Gillette Cup premier title for the first time in College history. Ben Breitmeyer had another outstanding year of cricket. Along with being a member of the College 1st XI, Ben captained the U17 Canterbury Indoor Cricket team to a bronze medal in the Junior Provincial Championships and was named Team MVP and in the New Zealand U17 Tournament Team. He also played in the Senior Provincial Championships for the U22 Canterbury squad and was selected
