Matthew Flint was awarded a Gold with Academic Honours. Somes House – joint Interhouse Champion 2022 with Flower's House All of that has been the happening outside Somes House, either through College or outside the gates. The following is a glimpse of what the students have achieved through the interhouse competitions. INTERHOUSE EVENTS Open Interhouse Competitions Swimming was a victim of Covid-19 at the start of the year, but we did have a serious swim team of Jacob Clements, James Drury, Matthew Flint, Callum Gard, George Grace, Finlay Sharpe, Jackson Grace and Mun Chi Jager competing. Hopefully, 2023 will see it return. Athletics was also affected, with only finalists coming out on Athletics Day and no relays. We were 5th overall based on podiums for Tawhiri Cate, Hoani Ifopo-Togia, Louis McKeon, Josh Shannahan, Ihaka Cate, Alf Markham, Sam Chittock, Callum Gard, Armani Lemalu (breaking a College record in the process) and Hopo Leota. The highlight for the athletics was the commitment and desire of the Year 9 students to be involved, something that continued throughout the year. In other open interhouse competitions, the chess team reached the final, where we had a narrow loss to Flower's House. The haka competition made a return after several years, and, likewise, the full school cross country, where we had top-20 finishes by George Howard and Koen Jager in the senior race, Finlay Sharpe and Sam Belcher in the junior race, and Jack Howard, Josh Shannahan and Liam Singer in the U14 race, with Jackson Grace 3rd in the U14 race. Our clay target shooting team was 2nd, with Henry Lassen 2nd and Maurice Gillard 3rd overall, while our team took out the inaugural reading quiz. The two big cultural events of House Music and House Plays were superb evenings for Somes House. William Law pushed the whole House Music from the beginning and brought the small group together, with Jack
College Senior A basketball team that won the national title, and also won the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ team of the year at the Zonta Awards. Ihaka was recognised through his achievements by being selected for the New Zealand U15 basketball team and was College’s Junior Sportsman of the Year. Jacob Clements was also part of the College Senior A basketball and was also nominated in the excellence in two sports category for the Zonta Awards following his success in basketball and water polo this year. He was selected for the New Zealand U19 water polo team to compete in the Australian State Championships in early December. James Drury and Andrew Welsh were both selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra. James as the principal French horn and Andrew for the percussion section. Chamber music hit a high over the year with groups involving Andrew Welsh and Ryan Gu making it through to the regional finals. Ryan’s group went on to the national finals and was placed second in the NZCT Chamber Music Contest. At College prize-giving, the following were recognised with prizes:
