CULTURE Theatresports

Theatresports is alive and thriving at College, with four successful and talented teams across all year levels showcasing their exceptional improvising abilities this year. Three teams went on to the Court Theatre finals, with the fourth not far off qualifying. There were definitely high spirits and enthusiasm across the board. SENIOR COMPETITION Our two seasoned and dynamic senior teams played in the annual Court Theatre Theatresports Competition in August at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. Our senior B team, seething with the dry wit of Year 13 students Oli Aikawa, Oscar Gosling and Joey Young, alongside newcomer

Eric Kuo, began their heat with an entertaining Speak in One Voice, followed by New Choice, featuring a flock of vampires, which put the team only one point behind Avonside Girls’ High School heading into the Challenge round. Unfortunately, their ridiculous Song Cue about a space bee could not close the gap and they yielded their spot in the finals to Avonside. Our senior A team starred some of College’s most enthusiastic and physical players – Youth Court Jester Adam Raitt, vice-captains Ollie Jones and Ryan Primus, and Year 12 students Thom Bell and William Sudell. A Poem about a chinchilla, followed by Switch Left, put us one point ahead for the final round, where an exceptional Ballet about

Vision the dog secured our journey to the finals. Staged at the Court Theatre, up against our relentless rival, Cashmere High School and three other elite teams, these improvisors came out fighting. We began with a gruesome display of theatrical taxidermy in Word at a Time, followed by a dynamic Ballet, where a unicorn went on a journey to fix his small horn, with many an innuendo keeping the audience giggling. The competition ended with a Song Cue about Queen Elizabeth being set on by her power-hungry husband. While quite relevant, it was a bit too soon for some. After a formidable competition and an exhilarating afternoon of theatrical prowess, we had to yield the trophy, yet again, to Cashmere.
