in the workshop, where, first, they all looked at safety in the workshops, before moving on to the tools. The industrial design course was a new course this year where boys came up with a design for a product and explored it either by producing CAD models or practical models. In Years 12–13, students had the option to specialise in either Materials Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or – for the first time – Building & Construction, with many opting for two courses. The Materials Technology course focused on the whole design process, with students problem-solving and exploring different skills and techniques using both CAD modelling and traditional approaches in the workshop. This year, we introduced the Year 12 Building & Construction course, where students completed a variety of outdoor furniture projects. The boys continued to enjoy the practical unit standard course in Mechanical Engineering, with many gaining apprenticeship opportunities, both alongside and after completing their Technology studies at College.

The Technology Department has not stopped growing and it has been fantastic to be able to offer Building & Construction this year. I am grateful to my energetic team who are always there at lunchtime to offer extra help to their students. Thanks also to the dedication and ongoing commitment of our team of Technology teachers – Craig Walker, Gavin Love, Kevin Harris, Carey Prebble, Kate Belton, Emma Bradley-Hudson, Monique Ellis- Martin and Brent Anderson. As the year draws to a close, we farewell Gavin Love. Gavin’s leadership in the department, and especially in Mechanical Engineering, has paved the way for growth in this subject area, with two classes in Year 13 and two classes in Year 12. His high expectations, care of his students and patience in teaching have been vital to the success of the course
