Ihaka Cate
Junior Sportsman of the Year This year's recipient, Ihaka Cate, has been involved in a variety of sports over the last 12 months, with success across the board. He has achieved this by being well organised and having a commitment to all that he does. As a Year 10 student, Ihaka is already a starting-squad member of both the Senior A volleyball and basketball sides at College, as well as being a member of the College U15A rugby side. He has been a key contributor in all three sports, although it is basketball where he has enjoyed the most success recently. He was a member of the College Senior A team which won the Canterbury, South Island and New Zealand secondary schools’ titles, with Ihaka starting in the national schools’ final. He has been a member of the Canterbury U15 team which competed at Nationals, and was selected for the NZ U15 side. Ihaka travelled to Guam recently for the Oceania Championship, where the national team lost a close-fought final to Australia. Ihaka is a great role model through his leadership and commitment to all aspects of College life.
Hunter Adam
Senior Sportsman of the Year Hunter has made a strong impact on College’s basketball programme over his three years in the Senior A team. He has played 74 games for the team and been pivotal in the team winning the Canterbury schools Thomson Trophy for the past three years. In 2022, the Senior A team also won the South Island schools’ title, and then the New Zealand secondary schools’ title for the first time in College’s history. At the national tournament, Hunter was named in the tournament team and also awarded the tournament MVP. In 2022, he was a member of the Canterbury U19 team that won the national tournament and was named the tournament MVP. He travelled to Australia and the United States as part of the NBA Global Academy programme and was selected for the New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks squad. Earlier in 2022, Hunter signed for the Canterbury Rams and enjoyed court time during the season’s NBL. This was an outstanding achievement for an athlete still at secondary school. Hunter has managed his many commitments effectively and has been a positive sporting role model. He aims to play College basketball in the US in 2023. We wish Hunter all the best for his sporting aspirations.
Zinzan Bondarenko-Leatua
The Ali Grigg Diploma Prize for all-round excellence in the Christ's College Diploma For a young man who only started at College at the beginning of this year, his achievement is remarkable. Zinzan set his goal for a Gold Diploma early in Term 1. He joined the Eco-Action group and within the first three terms of 2022 he managed to gain his Eco-Action Warrior and Eco-Action Leader badges. Of his own accord he joined one of the Year 10 Immerse & Inspire Boyle River camps in order to complete his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. He has also completed the Adventurous Journey section of his Silver DoE. His Ta¯ha Ma¯ori Silver and Gold bids were of an exceptional standard. He was captain of the U15A Rugby team and led by example. His high work ethic, empathy and leadership were exceptional. His work ethic and drive are also evident in his studies, where Zinzan attained Excellence in the majority of NCEA standards completed and reached the top stage of progression for most Diploma courses. Zinzan has actively immersed himself in College life both in and outside of the classroom and is a deserving recipient of the inaugural Ali Grigg Prize.
