KINDERGARTEN – EIGHTH GRADE
ACADEMICS Levine Academy offers an innovative curriculum combining the best of both general and Jewish studies and is committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere of diversity. Teachers and students reflect different traditions of Jewish observance and share a variety of skills and interests. Teaching is tailored to each student’s needs and strengths. This approach fosters self-confidence and promotes success. Assignment Book (3 rd – 8 th Grade) All students write assignments in their assignment book. Parents are asked to check and review the assignment book nightly. Homework The purpose of homework is to prepare, strengthen and enrich students for classroom activities. Students are encouraged to plan and use their time productively and become self-directed in meeting these responsibilities.
Missed assignments may result in a lunch detention – at the discretion of the teacher and in consideration of the needs of each individual student.
Homework expectations will be communicated by the teacher to parents and students at the beginning of the school year.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Homework Policy Bar/Bat Mitzvah is an amazing event in the life of our Sixth/Seventh/Eighth graders. As our children reach the age of Jewish “adulthood” (12 and a day or 13 for girls, and 13 for boys), they celebrate by leading services in their synagogue, reading Torah and Haftarah, preparing and delivering speeches about their Torah portion and what the occasion means to them. They spend several months preparing for this milestone and the week prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah can be filled with anxiety, as well as excitement. In keeping with our Ethical Covenant, we want to be caring and compassionate. It is our policy that any student wishing to do so may ask for an extension on homework assignments, projects, tests or quizzes the week prior to the Shabbat of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Students will have until the Friday following their event to make up the work. Final Exams Students in Eighth grade will complete final exams in all six-core subjects during the second trimester. - Eighth grade exams are worth 10% of the trimester grade and are comprehensive in nature. - During final exams, there is no homework except studying for the exams. Additionally, 1-2 days prior to exams, classes are devoted to review. Honor Roll Students begin earning Honor Roll status in the second trimester of Fifth grade. - A student will earn Honor Roll status by receiving a combination of ‘A’s (90-100) and ‘B’s (80- 89) with no more than three ‘B’s in all core subjects, enrichment classes and electives. - Students earn High Honor Roll status by receiving A’s in all core subjects, enrichment classes and electives.
