SOME SAFETY RULES FOR HUNTING WILD TURKEY IN SPRING GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca and may cause mistaken identification by another hunter.

When setting up a call area for wild turkey, make sure there is terrain visibility for a distance of at least 40 to 60 metres. Sit with the back to a large tree or rock to provide protection from the rear in case of someone else shooting in your direction. If another hunter approaches the calling post, do not wave hands to signal. Any sudden movement might be mistaken for a turkey flushing from the bush. Use a whistle or speak in a loud, clear voice. Ask permission before going hunting on private property or to retrieve any game. Plan ahead for a hunting trip and get permission from landowners in the area if there is a chance of crossing private property while on the trail. Do not assume permission even if permission was given in past seasons. Do not use ATVs or set up temporary campsites or shooting blinds without permission. Be aware of any lives- tock and whether or not the landowner or other family members may be in the woods at the time. Report any violations of hunting rules toll-free at 1-877-847-7667.

Wild turkeys are strutting all over the back roads and even in some residential neighbourhoods of Prescott-Russell as if ignoring the start of the spring wild turkey hunting season. Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources warns local and visiting hunters to make sure they have their wild turkey season licences handy. Conservation officers are out in the field now doing random checks of individual hunters and hunting parties to make sure they are licensed and are obeying game bag limitations. They will also do firearms inspections and will check to make sure hunters are following proper safety etiquette while roaming the woods in search of wild turkeys. Hunter safety The first rule of hunter safety is no drin- king alcohol or smoking marijuana while in the woods or fields with a loaded firearm. Shooting at a target from or across a road is not allowed. Be careful when carrying loaded firearms. Keep the shotgun safety on and do not have the finger on the trigger unless aiming at a target and preparing to shoot. Do not climb over trees or fences holding a loaded firearm. Place the weapon on the ground on the other side of the tree or fence and then climb over. Do not carry loaded firearms inside a vehicle. That includes ATVs. Do not shoot

—archives
