CELEBRATING WITH MOM

MAY 2020

Getting Together on Mother’s Day

F or many of us, from the time we’re born and well into our adult lives, our moms are there giving us support and offering encouragement every step of the way. Mother’s Day gives all of us a chance to thank our mothers for everything they’ve done for us and to reflect on just how much they’ve influenced the people we are today. My mom has been an inspiration to her whole family: myself, my siblings, all our kids, and all the grandkids, too. She’s always been a fount of unconditional love and encouragement, and she taught me a lot about what it really means to have a work ethic. For me and my brothers, she was also very forgiving — the three of us were always getting into some kind of shenanigans. As kids, my brothers and I always tried to celebrate Mother’s Day by doing something nice for our mom. We’d make it a point to give her flowers or make her a card every year, and our dad made sure we

What my mom likes most about Mother’s Day, though, is just having everyone together. She’s always been someone who likes to have people over, and usually for this holiday, a lot of people head over to visit her. The family usually goes down to my mom’s to spend the day with her, take her out to lunch, or just relax and catch up. All of us are really looking forward to spending time with her because none of us have had the chance to see her these past few months. She’ll be 89 this year, and with everything that’s happened, it’ll be good to get out of being barricaded in for so long and celebrate Mother’s Day together. When my wife became a mother for the first time, it was a life- changing experience for both of us. Having kids is a lot of fun, but it requires a lot of work. Watching my wife step into the role of mother was inspiring. The two of us have a lot of great memories of the kids growing up and some fun Mother’s Day celebrations. One year, our kids made her cookies, and all I did was supervise to make sure they used the oven correctly. While the cookies weren’t made from scratch, my wife still really enjoyed them. Whatever your plans are for this Mother’s Day, I hope that they are enjoyable. Happy Mother’s Day! -Dr. Steven Schulte

got it to her on time. I remember one year, one of my brothers and I made a really big card for her out of big sheets of paper. We had to go down to a local craft store to pick out the paper we used, and we decorated it as much as we could.

Why May Is the Best Month to Start Bird-watching is like a lifelong scavenger hunt that you can play anywhere on Earth. The activity provides a mixture of science, travel, and beauty, and it’s a chance to get outside for feathered adventures and quiet reflection. The month of May is a great time of year to go birding because rising temperatures prompt spring migration. So if you’re eager to begin bird-watching, there’s no better time than now. Here are some tips to get started. BIRD-WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS

Give Your Teeth a Shield

Educate Yourself

Thousands of species of birds span all corners of the globe. That’s why finding them is an exciting prospect — there’s no end to the hunt! Start by researching birds that are native to your location. Purchase a field guide with pictures of each bird and maps of their range and use it to figure out where different birds live. From there, it’s easy to pick your first spotting goal. You can even get yourself extra excited by watching a few bird documentaries.

WARD OFF PLAQUE AND DEBRIS WITH A SEALANT

Everyone knows that regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist help prevent cavities, but cleaning every inch of your teeth can be hard, especially when it comes to molars. While adults might find it challenging to thoroughly clean their teeth, kids can have an even harder time reaching to clean molars and all the grooves and spaces in our teeth. That’s why we offer sealants, which protect teeth and “seal out” debris in those areas. What is a sealant? A sealant is a protective coating that our dentist places on permanent molars to prevent cavities from forming on the tooth; it reduces the risk of tooth decay as well. The thin coating adheres to the tooth’s surface, but it does not replace brushing and flossing. Sealants reduce risk and prevent cavities, but you still need to take regular care of your teeth. How are they applied? Applying a sealant to a tooth or teeth is easy and painless. First, your dentist will clean and dry the area and place an acidic gel on the tooth’s surface, which creates a rough surface to which the sealant can bond strongly. The gel is rinsed off, the mouth is dried, and the sealant is applied and hardened by a blue light. This process can also be applied to already existing cavities to prevent them from spreading in the tooth. What’s their impact? Sealants are known to reduce tooth decay by almost 80% in molars, which is crucial to a child’s oral health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “School-aged children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.” Despite this, the CDC also reports that only 43% of children between the ages of 6–11 have sealants.

Gear Up

One of the best things about birding is that you don’t need a lot of equipment to do it. As long as you’ve got your field guide and comfortable walking shoes, the only other thing you’ll need is a pair of binoculars. And they don’t have to be fancy. As long as they can zoom in on faraway trees and perches, they’ll work for now. You can always upgrade later.

Go Exploring

Your very first birding excursion is important because you don’t want to be overwhelmed or underwhelmed. So use your field guide to home in on a single bird and go find it. It may be local, or you can plan a trip to a specific bird’s natural habitat. Stay focused and don’t get distracted by other species. The thrill that comes with spotting your first bird will keep you coming back to find the rest. Bird-watching is a wonderful hobby because it’s easy to get started and can last a lifetime. As long as you can walk, drive, or look out a window, you can be a birder. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and find some birds!

If you and your child are struggling with cavities, consider getting a sealant to give you the extra protection you need. Call Auburn Dental Center today at 402-274- 5110 to schedule an appointment.

loved working there, especially with the kids, so much. It was very rewarding.” After her youngest child entered college, Chris turned her attention back to the dental field and joined our team here at Auburn Dental Center. “It’s very good to be back,” she says. “I get to see all these smiles again and visit with the people again. I knew people from a long time ago when I worked for the other dental office, people who I haven’t seen for many years now. It’s really good to see them all again.” In the office, Chris cares a lot about her work and our patients, just as she cares for herself and her family at home. When she isn’t spending time with her husband, children, and two dogs, you can find her reading through a new book or outside enjoying the sun. Since spring started, Chris has been busy in her garden and looks forward to even greater weather in the summer.

Mayo Clinic. My husband is originally from here, so when we moved, he brought me here, and I joined the other dental office in town.” For the next 19 years, Chris worked diligently in the dentistry field and discovered that she thoroughly enjoyed the work quite a lot. Not only did she learn how closely the dentistry and medical field intersect, but she also experienced the same joy in her work. “I enjoyed that dentistry had the same atmosphere,” Chris says. “And the people! I’ve always liked meeting new people and getting to know them, especially seeing all the kids come in.” When Chris and her husband began to grow her family, she wanted to make sure she could be home for her kids and working while they were at school. As her kids entered school, she moved from her position in dentistry and began working in the elementary school. In her position, she screened kids for dyslexia and tutored them. “I

HOW TO DRESS ON VACATION

A Guide to Packing Light and Looking Good

undergarments for the whole trip unless you know you’ll have access to a washing machine. If you do have to wear an article of clothing a second time, use a freshening spray like Downy’s Wrinkle Releaser. The spray will eliminate odors and can give your clothes a flat-ironed look. Speaking of clothes, the best outfits are the ones you feel confident in. Consider getting your favorite items tailored and fitted before your trip, and plan multiple outfits that can be reorganized into unique combinations. From classic choices, like jeans, to more unique choices, like print shirts and layered jackets, there are lots of distinct items you can mix and match. Also remember to bring both formal and casual options, just in case you want to dress up for a night out. Lastly, accessories can breathe new life into an existing outfit. Scarves, belts, jewelry, bags, and hats can add a pop of color or elegance while taking up less space than another full outfit. Try to bring a few that’ll work well with your other items!

Ask any seasoned traveler and they’ll tell you the same thing: Having some spare room in your suitcase never hurts. People tend to shop for new clothes or souvenirs while traveling, and these purchases can take up space fast. However, with longer vacations, it can be difficult to limit how many clothes you’re bringing. How do you keep a smaller wardrobe fresh and comfortable while also looking your best? Try using some of these travel wardrobe tips. Packing light isn’t necessarily about packing less; it’s about addressing your needs in the healthiest, least physically demanding way. For example, your feet contain about 250,000 sweat glands, so clean

socks are essential for preventing smelly feet and shoes. Likewise, make sure you have enough
