What is sciatica, and why are you suffering with the pain? If you have changes in your posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the sciatic nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. This is sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nurve in your body. It even reaches down to your foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, your pain can be felt anywhere from the base of your spine, your buttocks or your thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in your toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve. Here are some symptoms you are probabaly suffering from: • Constant pain in only one side of your buttock or leg (rarely in both your legs) • You have pain that is worse when sitting • You have leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or searing (versus a dull ache) • You notice weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving your leg, foot, and/or toes • You feel a sharp pain may make it difficult for you to stand up or walk • You wince when you have pain that radiates down the leg and possibly into the foot and toes (it rarely occurs only in the foot) Your sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and irritating to constant and incapacitating. Symptoms that you suffer with are usually based on the location of your pinched nerve. While your symptoms can be painful and potentially debilitating, it is rare that you will have permanent sciatic nerve damage (tissue damage).
