What can you do to take care of your car?

October is Fall Car Care Month

Should you wax your car before winter?

Preparing your car for winter

There was a time when waxing the paintjob of a car was pretty much necessary in order to keep it shiny and well protected. That era is now long gone, since auto manufacturers have developed automobile paint to the point where it barely needs any attention other than an occasional washing. In fact, car paint today has a very hard, clear quality that resists fading and, to a certain extent, light scratches. There are still many proud car owners out there who swear that a coat of wax before winter helps protect their car’s paint. So

Whether you choose to wax your car yourself or have it waxed by a car detail- ing shop, have the vehicle well washed beforehand. You might also want to pur- chase some car care products to protect the interior and the tires. Some garages and detailers can prepare your vehicle for winter with special products in order to pre- vent the kind of light paint damage that could turn into rust spots next spring. You paid big money for that vehicle, so it’s natural to want to protect it the best you can!

Cold weather and slippery roads are once again at the doorstep. That means it’s time to prepare your car for winter. These days, a lot of motorists don’t really think about basic maintenance and pre-win- ter prep because newer cars require less overall maintenance than they did a few golden years ago. But the reality is that car owners can do several things to get ready for the cold season. Changing over to winter tires is the most important move to make. They are adapted for cold pavement and icy conditions and increase road safety beyond measure. After the tires, it is important to change the wiper blades, even if they don’t seem to show any wear. Opting for special winter wiper blades is a great idea, as winter blades are designed to prevent ice build-up. Long before the first snowfall, all the engine fluids should be checked, starting with the windshield washer liquid. You don’t need a mechanic to do a simple job like this one. If you don’t know where to find the spouts for the other engine fluids, look in your owner’s manual, located in the glove com- partment. Incidentally, browsing through that little book could bring you some use- ful information on all kinds of things you can do to keep your car in top shape.

Even a new car needs to be prepped for winter.

much the better, because there is certainly no harm in a good wax job! But choosing the right wax is not as easy as it was before, as fewer people know about the prod- ucts available these days. Keep in mind that while some auto parts stores offer specialized waxes for expensive cars or custom cars, hardware stores offer a range of products for the average car owner.

Buy a set of special winter rubber mats for the interior. Protecting your car’s carpeting from melting snow and salt is another way of keeping the vehicle’s resale value. If your new car is equipped with block heating but you are not familiar with how it works, ask your mechanic to show you where the plug is. In fact, why not ask your mechanic to give your car a looking over before winter. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that every- thing’s okay just because you don’t hear any clunking or grinding! In the coldest season of the year, you want to be able to drive in complete confidence that everything’s work- ing perfectly.

Car paints are tougher than ever, but some protection is always good.
