Upper Canada Sports League celebrates

BROCKVILLE | School sports are growing stronger in the Upper Canada district. Trustees for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) received a report from Ron Ferguson and Trish Brown, co- founders of the Upper Canada Sports League (UCSL) on the league’s rapid growth since its creation three years ago. The UCSL began with three organized league sports programs for Grades 7 and 8 students during the 2012-2013 school term. Now the UCSL has developed and promot- ed participation in regional and cup tourna- ments and competitions for cross-country running for Grades 4 to 8 students, orga- nized soccer for Grades 7 and 8, volleyball and basketball across all five high school grades, and a track-and-field program for Grades 7 and 8 students. Upper Canada district schools have al- ways had extra-curricular sports programs for rugby, soccer, track and field, volleyball, basketball, and hockey, but not always for all grade levels at all schools and not for all sports. Some schools have limited means or facilities to offer for some extra-curric- ular sports. The UCSL has worked to help support both elementary and secondary schools in the Upper Canada district with their amateur sports programs outside of the regular school curriculum through ef- forts like coaching certification assistance. The UCSL’s next goal is to boost the num- ber of opportunities for intramural sports at Upper Canada district schools. The league report noted that some schools offer limited or no intramural sports because of timeta- bling difficulties for teacher-sponsors. One solution, the league report noted, may be to use senior students as intramural sports supervisors as part of their own leadership or career goal curriculum requirements.
