Jamie Barr – Year 12, Harper House Curiosity, Perspective
Jamie has mastered the art of perspective, of keeping a balance between academic study and House, sport, drama, music and socialising. “I can immerse myself in a lot and I really enjoy being a sportsman, participating in cultural activities and leadership opportunities.” Not only does he play 1st XI football, but he also plays for Ferrymead Bays on Saturdays. In summer, it’s cricket, where he is a handy bowler. Appearing in Evita was an exciting progression from appearing in High School Musical in Year 9 and Much Ado About Nothing in Year 10. Jamie had never sung before he came to College; he’s been in Chapel Choir for the last four years, now as a tenor. Singing in Harper’s small group at House Music required real concentration. “Putting together a piece of such high calibre with a group of your mates is no easy feat.”
Sam Willems – Year 12, Jacobs House Love of Learning, Curiosity
2020 is proving unforgettable for Sam – it was to have been spent in the USA on a 12-month exchange. Instead after just three months, Covid-19 saw him home from Sacramento, California, back in uniform. “I’d made a lot of friends there, and I was enjoying it at a big co-ed school, plus skiing at Lake Tahoe. It’s cool meeting new people and all the experiences that come with new places.” A big catch up, largely through lockdown saw him master a term of Level 3 Calculus largely by himself. A keen road cycler and skier, Sam was sixth out of 90 at the Canterbury Ski championships, and is looking forward to the South Island event in Wanaka. He’s also a keen musician, plays guitar and piano and has his sights set on taking two STAR courses through UC next year.
Henry Mossman – Year 13, Corfe House Zest, Leadership, Humility
Henry has refused to be bowed by Covid-19 and lockdown, and if anything they’ve increased his zest for College and his House. “I love my House and have done tons of stuff for it this year.” Organising relay teams for athletics and swimming sports, driving boys to House tennis, participating fully in everything on offer, Henry hasn’t wasted a moment. “I love getting involved with the Year 9s and 10s. You don’t need a title to do what you want to do.” Cox for the rowing eight, striker for the hockey 1st XI, conductor of Corfe House music, and in the small vocal group, Henry’s talents have been on show throughout the year. “I’m very happy that my parents were able to send me to College – I’ve got a great year group of friends.”
