CHELTENHAM TRUST PUTS £45,000 RESTORATION PROJECT OUT TO TENDER A £45,000 transformation project at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham is being put out to tender for construction companies. The Clarence Street premises are formed of a Victorian museum and a 20th century gallery and the project is designed to link the two. It also seeks to reconfigure two small exhibition spaces on the second floor of the museum to create a 'maker space' for visitors to engage in hands-on activities. The Trust has released a full and detailed brief that includes details of the £45,000 budget and the difficulties around timing because of the museum's packed schedule of events. The budget has been secured by a grant from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Wolfson Musueum and Galleries Improvement fund. Contractors who have experience in the sector and are interested in submitting a tender should contact the Cheltenham Trust by October 7 l

ALL ABOARD! NEW HERITAGE RAILWAY SET TO OPEN IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE A new heritage railway could soon be steaming into action in the south of Gloucestershire. TheVale of Berkeley Railway has submitted plans to Stroud District Council to build two stations on the former Sharpness Branch line. The line, which was taken out of passenger service during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, has remained intact since. However, since then the only rolling stock to use the track are nuclear flask carrying trains who serviced the Berkeley power station. But the volunteer-run railway, which currently operates out of an old engine shed at Sharpness Docks, has now submitted plans to build stations at both Sharpness and Berkeley and reopen the line as a tourist attraction l The funding could be used to improve transport and access into town centres, convert empty retail units into new homes and workplaces, and invest in vital infrastructure. Prime minister Boris Johnson said: "Our high streets are right at the heart of our communities, and I will do everything I can to make sure they remain vibrant places where people want to go, meet and spend their money. "But with our town centres facing challenges, we're expanding the High Streets Fund to support over 100 high streets to regenerate - backed by £1 billion of vital investment. "This scheme is going to reenergise and transform even more of our high streets - helping them to attract new businesses, boost local growth, and create new infrastructure and jobs" l
